dont worry there is no camera on the bridge but be careful the derbyshire police use the road regularly to get to the villages out there
And they are getting keener since we threatened to put a vigilante at each end
A FOOD firm has been fined more than £3,000 after its lorries broke weight restrictions and used an historic bridge.
Derbyshire County Council prosecuted JJ Food Service Limited, of Solar Way, Enfield, Middlesex, for breaking the weight restrictions at Swarkestone Causeway, Swarkestone.
The bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and is covered by a 7.5-tonne weight restriction to protect it from damage.
The authority said the company had broken the weight restrictions three times. On all occasions the vehicles had a maximum gross weight of 17.8 tonnes — more than double the legal limit.
The case against JJ Food Services Limited was heard at Derby Magistrates Court. The firm was fined a total of £3,000 after admitting the charges by letter and was ordered to pay court costs of £115.
Wizard.
Don’t worry about it. The rest of the civilised people round this neck of the woods are planning to bomb the bridge (which was allegedly build by the women of the area because the blokes are all to lazy and fat, or too busy on the computer) and watch the 'South of ‘t river’ locals slip back into the 14th century.
If you read your history, you will see that during the Jacobite Rebellion, Bonnie Prince Charlie reached this causeway;
In 1745 during the Jacobite Rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, the advance party of his army reached here to gain control of the crossing of the Trent. Finding no reports of support from the south, they turned back to Derby; the invading army then retreated to Scotland and final defeat at the Battle of Culloden. Swarkestone thereby being the most southerly point reached during that army’s advance on London.
However,North of 't river locals believe that they looked over the marsh and upon seeing the interbred locals who, to be honest were struggling to use the bows and arrows as most of them had four thumbs and a big toe on each hand (and they had three or four hands each!) Bonnie Prince decided that going any further was liable to increase the chances of introducing deformities into the Scottish breeding stock and with them already having the Ginger hair defect, thought they had enough problems.
I always thought that the Bonnie Prince did well to get his army across the Derby Ring Road at Markeaton, it used to take me ten minutes to negotiate it with one eight wheeler during rush hour let alone an army of men and horses!

P.s i was driving a double axle rigid Mercedes which i think weighs 10 or 11 ton and i was empty…
Your actual weight, load and the number of axles has no bearing on the offence. It is the MAM (maximum authorised mass), that matters. If your’s is a three axle rigid then it’s likely to be 26 tonnes.
yes there is a camera, but your punishment will not come from the police…no,it will be dealt with by the locals.you will be rounded up unexpectedly one night, and hung upside down beneath the very bridge from which you commited your foul deed.you will then be pelted with rotting vegtables by the villagers children.

Hi guys, Bit worried about something. Had to go to Swadlincote from the A50… Anyway i came of at the wrong junction and there is a 7.5 ton weight limit, which i didnt realise untill i was passed it… I was day dreaming and missed the sign, my fault i know. Anyway i came to a corner and anyone who has been around this area will know what i mean… At the corner there is two weight limits , one to the left and one to the right… By the time i came to this junction there is no where to turn and there was loads of traffic behind me, so i was panicking a bit so i just kept going… before the bridge with the limit it says there is an enforcement camera… so im now ■■■■■■■■it incase i get a fine and maybe points. I could not see any camera so mayb there was not any… any of you guys from aroud that area that can put my mind at ease… Honestly, by the time it all happened it was to late to do anything, and it its a long ancient wall/bridge i believe, so maybe they will enforce it…
Thankyou

Go past/thru that junction a lot - and see quite a few Artics going over the bridge (built by the Romans allegedly, and where Bonnie Prince Charlie came to a halt on his way to London) - I have looked for camera’s, but never noticed any, but that could be my poor eyesight

I will go and check the recordings later and post the picture of the miscreant on this forum before sending it to the DPP for prosecution.
The thing is there is more than enough warning signs on the A50 roundabout giving you ample opportunity to follow the correct route. As you come up both sliproads there are signs showing that Derby and Chellaston are 7.5 tonne limits, there is also a sign showing the weak bridge as well as repeated signs a long time before you come to the left handed bend with the hump back bridge and point of no return.
For the community living south of the River Trent the ancient causeway is our lifeline for ambulances and emergency vehicles. There are plenty of alternative routes around the area, non of which mean using the canal bridges, historic monuments or unsuitable roads in the area.
It was Essex Trading Standards who were going to prosecute me for using a short stretch of a 7½ tonne weight limit in Chigwell Essex. After they contacted me via my employers, I wrote to them explaining how I had come to be in the limit due to stupid route planning on my behalf. They dropped the issue thankfully, but the maximum is a £2000 fine.
I was followed throught he limit by an Essex Trading Standards official apparently, no police involved at all. Letter came throught he post to the company after nine days.
Good luck.
Thanks guys for your replies… It has helped put my mind at ease… Your right wheel nut there probably are loads of signs warning of the weight limit on the A50, But like i said in my first post i was day dreaming and accept full responsibility… Im pretty sure you have been in the same situation at some point… I do understand that it is an historical route and i appologise for using it… Although i can assure you that i always adhere to weight limits and speed limits… And i can assure you i wont be using that road again…

Certainly have and probably did the same thing.
Hanson mentioned about the police using that road regularly. They do, but are not very good at their proper jobs. They never caught the [zb] who nicked the camera
