Seen a sign today saying this road into Paignton will be shut for 7 weeks from 13th February so you might need to find an alternative route, anybody know if the A3022 is ok for an artic ?
If you’re heading over to Brixham, you may as well ignore Hamelin Way on the way in - head into Torquay, hit the seafront, turn right and follow Brixham signs across the seafront. There’s a low bridge in Paignton, but it’s signed and you can get around it. It’s a bus route so you’ll be fine.
There’s a Cornwall Transport artic that does dailies out to Brixham, if he’s on here he can advise better than me.
All I’ll say is that you’ll save yourself some effort by not going up the ring road - when you come off at the roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway section (where the closure starts), surrounding roads aren’t really the best for artics, and you’ll probably struggle as it’s a busy route, so will be clogged up with cars. Not many buses, luckily.
If it’s really bad, what you can do is follow the aforementioned seafront route to Brixham, and if you’re delivering to Yalberton or the estate by the college, follow signs for Totnes once you hit Paignton town centre. A few nasty turns around the bus station area, but doable, Nat ex buses manage with a bit of assertive driving. Once you pass the zoo, you’ll be coming up on the ring road again, so can turn left to resume your original route.
Edit: Forgot to mention I’ve not long passed Cat C, I’m speaking from experience as a taxi driver. The whole area is on my school route, so I know it well.
Edit 2: Quick diagram. I don’t know where the bottom end of the closure is, so the diversion might not go through Ramshill Road: i.imgur.com/hg0dqBJ.png
Marldon Road (the road to your left coming off the roundabout) gets a bit tight with parked cars as you go down, but parking isn’t essential so could be coned off. If the satnav tries to turn you off Marldon Road, be prepared for narrow residential roads with parked cars. The bottom end of Marldon Road gets too narrow for a truck + van. Truck + car is a tight squeeze, so expect that if you’re sent down into the town centre. The ring road gets very busy in the mornings, so expect a lot of traffic.
Thank you for the above info 1 of our shops the yard is on Hyde Road (opposite The Ark)
Last time I went came down Marldon rd into Colley End rd then right onto A3022 then left into Hyde Rd but had a 33ft rear steer so was just about do-able Saturday afternoon aswell lol oh how fun not.
Yeah, any other day I’d say you’d be more or less OK to use the roads in question, but there’s a lot of traffic using the ring road, so it’s a question of how busy the roads would be. If cars are diverted through Foxhole (residential area on the right as you go down Marldon Rd), you’d be fine. Bottom end of Marldon Rd is OK as the traffic is light so you can get through, but if it’s all stacked up and you meet another truck coming the other way, it’d be a right pain.
If you do find it to be a hassle, and you’re heading back out of Torbay after Hyde Rd, don’t forget that once you’re back on the A3022, you can go through the lights at Cecil Rd, rather than turn left (where you came out of), and follow signs for Newton Abbot/Exeter, and that’ll be primary roads all the way to the A380.
A3022 Is fine, as said above its a bus route, from A380 coming into Torquay use Riviera Way/Newton Road/Avenue Road and turn right at the lights when you reach the seafront to join A3022. The low bridge in Paignton is I think 14’3", however you don’t go under it, because to stay on the A3022 you bear round to the right just before it (the A3022 briefly goes into a one way system here too). You then carry on and get to the lights where you bear left to enter Hyde Road.
Another way staying on good A roads is to not come down the A380, but in fact stay on the A38 until you get to the Buckfastleigh/Totnes junction. Come off the A38 to join the A384, then A385 through Totnes which will take you all the way into Paignton town centre and Hyde Road.
Thank you chaps for the above info much appreciated. Paignton isn’t that big to go getting it wrong.

The A384 is closed at the moment, until at least 17th Feb, where it crosses the River Dart.
So, for the week of 13th Feb, the A380 into Paignton is closed at the same time as the A384 Buckfastleigh to Totnes.
Not sure how you can possibly reach Dartmouth or Kingsbridge.

You can go further down the A38 and use the A385 but it’s the long way round .
