Possibly worse than a ■■■■ site, this one links to the Daily Mail!

Drove past tonight, looks like the accident is just after where the 6am-8pm HGV restriction ends.

If I’m on the A34 during the daylight I won’t go over 50mph.

Says “man in his 30’s arrested and bailed” , anyone know if it’s a lorry driver?

No mentions of “evil” “thundering” or “juggernaut” so probably not.

A.

Terrible tragedy. 4 killed sounds like mother and 3 kids. Anyone’s worst nightmare is to lose their child. Unimaginable!!

According to the Daily Wail it was one of the lorry drivers who was arrested.

I went to the Dowling scene ten years ago. Rough. I hate the A34 with a passion; the traffic and drivers on it are awful. I know the patch where this crash has happened well. It’s never fun driving along there. I suspect, someone hasn’t anticipated slow traffic as they’re coming to the crest of the hill, with Lane 2 no doubt being congested by people trying to dive past the HGV’s. Nowhere to go, no room to stop.

Sad times.

Read the comment… The public view of truckers “elephant racing” down the A34 is clear. “Steve Hill”'s remarks for instance…

Quite frankly I agree with the comments. The standard of truck driving down this stretch of road is quite awful. :frowning:

The race to and from Southampton and Portsmouth…

Is that a car under the back of the truck and in front of the silver one :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
Agreed that road is a shocking stretch from the M40 to the M3 :frowning: :frowning:

There’s ■■■■ all left of that car what them kids and woman was in crushed between the estate and the rigid what it’s gone under :frowning:
I know I shouldn’t but looking at those pics I’m guessing there has been traffic stood or nearly stood at the brow of the hill and probably the artic which is at the back has smashed into them at speed causing them to smash into each other and the fellow who’s partner and kids died is the estate which has ended up crashing into the back of his partners car and sending it underneath the back end of the rigid crushing it like a can.

The photos are truely horrific.
The force required to lift that 18 tonner up would of had to of been great. I dont think the white van looks like it was hit by a truck, as I would of thought the damage would of been greater.
I was on the A34 last week when I had to pass an accident. It didnt involve a lorry, but by publishing things like the models, index numbers of vehicles involved, any incidents of bad driving further back down the 34 could come to light. I was being tailgated on the M5 on wednesday in the roadworks at Gloucester. The wagon driver then overtook me (in a restricted lane) and pulled right in, in front of me, the went off at junction 11. There is absolutely no way he could of seen any queing traffic on the slip road, let alone of reacted if I had had to emergency stop.
I remember the company that he drives for. If I had found out that he had had an accident on the motorway that day, my footage would have gone straight to the police.
It frightens me that there are too many down right dangerous hgv drivers out there.

I had that road with a passion, that stretch is horrible. Far too traffic use, I nearly came a cropper when I went over the brow of that hill to find two motorbikes crawling along at 25mph a few months back.

I use the A34 quite a lot and here are some of my observations:
As bad as the A34 is, it’s crazy that cycles and tractors are not banned from using it.
This road also attracts a lot of dawdlers, I passed several going to and back from holiday last week. If you can’t confidently drive at 50mph then take a bus.
Car transporter drivers are amongst the worst drivers, and seem to be involved in a lot of accidents.

Use the road a lot and have to say some of the kit we move about is pretty underpowered - we’re down to 15 - 20 mph on some of the hills especially if we’re wag n drag.

Meanwhile in the lane on our righthand side is Johnny Audi at 85.

Some guys use their weight to make good progress - a Daf 105 blew past me last week on a down hill - he had to be doing over 70 at least.

There is, it has to be said a lot of fellas who use the road regularly and drive very professionally and know exactly what they can and can’t do, so no futile elephant racing from them.

The road doesn’t bother me unduly, just got used to it over the years.

Use the A34 way too often than I should as its pretty much a home straight for when i’m on container jobs from my yard in West Oxfordshire to Southampton on the south coast. Like others have said I don’t bother going 56 flat out all the way down (probably because its impossible but still). See plenty of wagons overtaking eachother doing flatout. Whats the point if you want to overtake a wagon doing 55 and you’re doing 56? Just knock it back a bit and follow behind.

Ever since I’ve got my new Volvo I’ve been a bit for calmer when ACC is on as its a very useful road to use it on.

In actual fact I was being overtaken the other week by a plain white unit with a Maritime skelly on, driver was on his mobile :open_mouth: so beeped my horn in anger and he wasn’t too impressed and decided he was above the law to put his middle finger up at me (no hands on the wheel at this point). I knocked it back from 53 to 49 and just let him go, can’t be asked by people like that :imp: :imp:

And no… i didn’t flash him in either…

RIP to victims. Thoughts are with you and your families. :frowning:
