Where have they gone now I’ve spent weeks looking for them - went over drive time, duty time and had to have an unplanned night out Had to park at some new services, think they were called Newport Pagnell or similar what a day.
JollyJack:
Tell me about it.
Some of those caravan “drivers” are just as bad most of the time.
Also when it comes to rain… why do they need to slow to 40mph? i have been trying to think why for ages now
why does any car driver slow right down in rain, allways been a mystery to me

Anyone else see the jackknifed caravan on the central reservation of the a1 (near wetherby) around 5pm today? It must’ve just happened before I got there as just drove past with no police on the scene,

What has that got to do with the A34 ■■? friggin miles and miles away

You know it’s amazing how using some antcipation and keeping a safe distance and controlling your speed can get rid of the idiots and the stress.
More should try it.
three easy words! Concentration, observation and anticipation lose one of those and you’re crashing drivers? Screwdrivers!

Was it the same caravan from the A34 ?
There was a woman, quite possibly the driver, waving her arms about in the central reservation. Big white Audi school run tractor unit and gypo sized caravan. All in £100k worth of kit prior to the incident.

Northampton services I belive nowadays .
And accessed via a roundabout I believe, no sliproads to inconvenience anyone

I thought you were all for safety and yet seem to condone (by not condemning) someone pulling out in front of another vehicle (assuming here he wasn’t “invited out”). The guy said he put the exhaust brake on (he wasn’t obliged to do even that). Having stated that, as a truck driver I would try to let another trucker out if possible, by observation and anticipation (as you stated) as we all know how difficult it is to get going from a layby.
Listen of course I am all for safety but the way the incident was described there was not enough thought gone into the situation.
Everyone’s an idiot apart from himself type.
Why was he not obliged to use the exhaust brake? Don’t tell me it was because the other truck was at fault.Oh right lets just smash into him because it’s his fault. Anticipation and observation can eliminate all that 99% of the time.
The whole situation sounds like what we see on our roads most days. Two drivers that don’t have a clue.
As I see it, the OP wasn’t obliged to do so as the other truck hadn’t yet pulled out, so, he was anticipating and allowing for such a potentially dangerous action (and even encouraged it by slowing down so shouldn’t moan when what he was anticipating occurred). Nothing happened, so the OP did good in the end and no-one would ever have known about it. I was only stating that the other driver hadn’t covered himself in glory by pulling out, assuming the OP to make amends for it, but we now seem to be in agreeance. Would like to hear a final word from the OP on all this. Cheers.

So… driving down the A34 at a pretty decent speed, 54 as stuck behind some tool with his caravan (yes its that time of year again…). This tool bag drives off on his merry way, and i’m building up speed back to 56. I get to 56 when i see a a waitrose daf waiting for room to pull out of this layby. So i knock engine break on as a small precaution but me (in my 10 year old experience head) know he wouldn’t be a massive idiot and ruin my day. When he does just that! I cant pull out to lane 2 as some daudling car moron is looking at my trailer wheels. Hazards on and breaks ON. I get down to 20mph when i’m about a nail length away from his trailer doors.
Not only did he pull out infront of me but he just didnt seem to speed up, until i had a chance to pull out. He throttles it when i’m down the side of him. But the volvo just carried on.
The species from a different planet even had the guts to give me a w**ker sign.
Hows everyones day been then?
I aint no caravan fan by any means but what exactly was the guy doing wrong. …and is 54 so wrong anyway, you don’t have to do 56, the limit/target thing has already been said.
As for the Waitrose DAF, he was in the wrong, but on a road like that, me personally I tend to keep my eye on trucks in lay bys.
Maybe if you had anticipated the situation a bit sooner (you admit you knew he was waiting for room) and indicated a bit earlier .(.pre the car being level with your trailer axle) it would have been a non event.
I aint siding with the Waitrose driver, but maybe he also thought you had ample time to let him out…btw he was in the wrong for just pulling out, I agree with you on that point.
Anyway I was not there, you were there, so the benefit of the doubt is yours mate.
I’m in the old school driver camp and tend to try and give way when I can at all times to fellow truckers waiting to pull out…when safe.
So taken time and read through everyones comments, very interesting comments also.
I respect everyones rights to commenting their feelings but unfortunately none of you were there but I was.
Yes i could of been going a bit slower and ride the limiter but it was all pretty plain sailing since i joined the carriageway.
I normally actually have a dash cam going, but for the only time i actually need it, i left the SD card at home like a complete div!
Also i really dont see the point in reporting the chap, i may of been doing wrong as well as him (even though he was worse than myself) at this time of year. I’m too much of a soft spot to see someone sacked if they need to bring up a family.
Never admit your guilty even if you are although it was obvious from your post you were not driving to your best ability.
Merry Xmas and safer driving.

Ok well done for admitting you may be wrong, but irrespective of the consequences and point of reporting the driver, I would never grass up a driver whatever the circumstances, it just aint on…end of.
