A14 Pile-up Lorry Driver banned for a year

I was reading this in the news today:

northamptonchron.co.uk/news/ … -1-7461336

The conviction seemed fairly predictable given the amount of damage and injuries caused.

The only aspect of the article I found unusual was reporting of the speed of the vehicle. The case seemed to be relying on the speed as estimated by other motorists at the scene of the accident. I am just puzzled why they don’t give the speed that was recorded on the lorry’s tacho.

Probably because the press are not privy to that particular information. It’s up to the police to give it out and it seems they chose not to in this case.

As for ‘checking his mirrors’ just before it all happened, what a load of cobblers. More than likely texting or just asleep.

Do digi tachos record speed?..No idea…Unlike the old analogue ones of course…

Yes they do and harsh braking amongst other useful information should it be needed after a crash.

I think it is only stored in the head unit for a limit period (24 or 48 hours). In the event of an accident you would think the police would retrieve this to help build a picture of what happened. But for some weird reason I don’t believe they can use it as exacting evidence? (i think if you were doing 56 in a 30 they would, but 56 in a 50 I doubt they would be interested)

Big changes ahead (or may be not with brexit) - see the new 500 page EU regulations for 2018 on Tachos, speed, hours, card inserted, calibration, axle weights how many times you have picked your nose - all downloadable by the police as you trundle down the motorway.
