WOW i remember all of these lads, remember bob cowen and billy Parkinson getting the last f88s S262WUG and s263…262 became our wrecker truck

Hi guy’s, I remember Bob Cowan went to live in Canada, he already had a Canadian passport so it was like going home to him, I know he came back and called in the yard to see who ever was there, but unfortunately he’d lost his legs, and he was in a wheel chair but he was still driving because he came in his car, unfortunately I didn’t see him, it was Frank Robson who told me he’d been in, but that was a long time ago, so we can only pray he’s still there, Billy Parkinson I haven’t seen or heard of since 1996 when I went into the hospital, so if anyone has any info please let us know, I think we already know that Taffy Davis is gone, along with Terry Leighton, he was living in my son-in-laws flat, and unfortunately was found dead after being ill for a short time, Jackie Broadbent died in Bridlington where he went to live after they took his licence away, due to circulation problems in his legs, John Taylor we all know died last year, and I was told Donald Jackson had died a few years ago, and not let’s forget Johny Mack, who was along with Taffy one of the original DLS drivers, he died around the same time as Taffy Davis, It’s sad but that’s life, and may they all RIP for ever. :frowning:   Jack Graham

Hi,i remeber transport manager Wilkie having a thing about having white bumpers painted brilliant white. He was telling all drivers to get them painted and Billy Parky had just turned up from a trip abroad and was filling up at the pumps. Wilkie came over to him and said to him hows your bumper today Billie. The reply was don’t know it has not spoken to me yet. Ha Ha.

no i’m pretty sure it was trevor, cleared at busto arsizio at same time as him a few times summer of 88, different loads

Hi Graha,ta for your reply.
Yes, I do remember him wanting to pay the fine. I remember us proping up his bar and you making me drawings of my first trip to “TEGLAS” up in the corner of HUNGARY. You mentioned Jack Dawson,What a w-----r! He used to use the spread axles of MY trailer to have his morning crap!!! I was o/n with him on the HOE CHE MIN road (between ZAGREB and BELGRADE) and couldn’t drive fast enough to get away from him!!
I had a very similar experience as you once. I loaded a very light load of a pea picking m/c from Norfolk to take to Budapest. I o/n’td on the German/Czec border. collectedtwo hitch hickers who wantedto go to PRAHA.They said they would show me the way through the city! I managedto rip down some tram lines in the centre, threw the lads out and got the hell out.I picked up the TIR signs, then found thatI couldn’t get through a bridge. ( All the other truckerswere going through). I started to let my tyres down and an old man in uniform told me to stop and he would show me the way. All he could say was “cigarrets” “whiskey” and all I could say was “NIET”.But I did eventually find thesigns for BRNO. How he managed to get backto PRAHA, I will never know.

More to follow!

Hi Stuart, well that’s a turn up for the books, now the words getting around and were all getting in contact again, it’s making us use our brains again instead of doing the things like too many folks do when they retire, and yes I can never forget that trip when I ended up with my unit with the back end in the ditch, it was the only accident I had in over 50 years driving, and it upset me for a long time, there were too many people hurt, and Bob did come to help, he was a great guy, do you remember he offered to pay the fine etc, it takes a lot for someone to trust a person who lives in another country like he did, we were friends for a long time and he was a great guy, and yes it would be nice to get together again, because the lads at A One were a good bunch to work with, and we had some fun, and worked well together. :-Jack

Crikey this thread is certainly rattling the old brain cells. Certainly remember “daisy”, but not sure of the tyre lads at Chapmans, vaguely remember they were worried at the time of the takeover. Mind anyone who would change tyes for me was brilliant, the day we got them ATS booklets was the last time I handled a tyre in anger. Often wonder whether Chalkie White the comedian got some of his material from “darky” Donald. One of his stories was about a night he was running up with night trunk loaded with wool, three of them were nose to tail and flat out when they passed a police car in layby. Policemen were snoozing when them three blasted past shaking the life out of them. When they were pulled, a few miles futher on, the front two were told that the back driver had done a runner and if they didnt get him to come back they would be booked. They told coppers that Donald wouldnt run and was still in the cab. They convinced the police to let them all go see. Donald said he was sitting there with his eyes and mouth shut when he heard them shouting for him to put his cab light on or theyd be booked this he did which had them rolling about with laughter. Last time I saw Donald was about 12-13 yrs ago in Aylesbury when he told me about his diesel saga, I think he had his own motor then, sad to hear hes passed on he was one of a kind.

Does anyone remember Jack ellis wo drove for them? He used to park his truck in Brighouse with another A one F7, His was a day cab that had been rolled in glasgow and put back on the road, I would have been about ten years old then and he would take us for a drive round our estate. Sometimes would see his truck in town with his family going to hillards supermarket! Seemed to use the trucks for personnal transport back then, Cant recall the other drivers name but do remember at one point there were three units parked together on our street ,F86,f7 and sometimes an F10. Never got any pics of them though.

YES I REMEMBER JACK ELLIS. I USED TO HAVE TO DELIVER HIS PAYPACKET TO HIS WIFE, IF HE WAS AWAY. THE OTHER NAME WAS RALPH GREER. THEY BOTH DID WORK FOR ACT WITH A 1 ALL THE TIME. HARD WORK, OPENING AND CLOSING THOSE 20FT CONTAINER DOORS!!! THEY BOTH HAD F7’S I HAD AN F86 THEN LATER ON F10 AND LATER THE FLYING MERC 1632. THOSEWERE THEDAYS WHEN YOU COULD BRING YOUR UNIT HOME, NO PROBS. STUART S (DRY GINGER) CB NAME. :unamused:
