True, but most of them went back after the war and the ones who stayed here went to work, we had Refugees living with us from the Crimea, realy nice people who all worked and still live here and paid all there taxes etc, unlike the scroungers who come today. Jack

I drove passed today and I was trying to remember the exact spot where it was. Was it the site thats got DW sports on it now or further up the road? Theres a cafe and what used to be a petrol station I think further up?
The only part of A One that remains is the JTF Building the rest is a new industrial estate ,i work on Gelderd Rd and pass it every day

Hi Frank, the comments we are passing around wont do a bit of good, its far too late for that, but its nice to air your feelings.
Les.
Here endeth the the A1 party political broadcast, can we now get on with the A1 party reunion, I hope your all letting everyone who don’t use the internet know about it, some of the contact numbers I have don’t work any more so I cant contact all the guy’s I knew before, I’ll still try more when I come home next month and hope I have some success so I’m relying on word of mouth, I’m also looking at August this time when the weather will be better, so I’m putting my soap box away for now and will keep looking on this page to keep it alive. Regards :-Jack.

Just finished reading on the net the history of Longs of Leeds. From starting out with a horse and cart to ending up with over 150 wagons is some going! A good and interesting read for everybody
Yes I remember Old Ken Mallinson, Desert Rat. A really nice bloke I found, and a good laugh. That was before I was subbing for AOne, he had retired before that. I have often wondered as I go down the A1, if those very smart looking lorries, working out of Asda Doncaster, Mallinson were from his family.

anyone remember Ken Mallinson aka dersertrat, hes my grandad and i am interested in any stories about him
ta
I’m sorry but I have no photo’s of Ken, but we worked together at A1 did a few trips together all over East and West Europe and I can assure you he was a pleasure to be with, both work and pleasure good company and helpful if we had problems which do happen at times when in the Eastern block, as I said in my post early on this thread we spent new year together in Austria after chasing to get out of Hungary one year, we stopped at a friend of mine just inside the Austrian border, we were made to join in there party to bring in the new year in a guesthouse which belonged to one of the family, and being one hour behind them, after they had danced and sang in the new year, within the next hour we taught them to sing Old-Lang-Sine so when it was our new year we all liked up and sang our new year in too, it is a night I will remember for the rest of my life, we both drank laughed all night although we were away from home for new year the company made up for the missery of not being home for new year, and that was only one trip with Ken. Regards :- Jack.
thanks for that i remember him talking about the lads some of the names were darky donald, jack robbie, taffy and jackie graham which i presume is you, its good to hear about him as i know it was one of the favourite eras of his life and he always talked about it until his death in 2002.

I was at Chapman’s when he sold out DLS to them, I didn’t go over the water then but the drivers who came from DLS Taffy Davis was one of them and he always talked about Ken because they were mates even then, and that’s where the European work came from it was DLS work, but most of it was Italy Germany etc, then A1 bought Chapman’s out and it grew from there, and there’s no doubt it was the best continental company going over the water then, we wanted for nothing, we had the work, permits, good wages & expenses and most of all good back-up when things went wrong, many drivers from other companies often said they wished they were on the same wages and back-up we had, that’s why it was a good firm to work for, and best of all the lorries were serviced regular on time and any faults were sorted out before we took them out again, and better still we kept the same lorries from new with only you as the driver, so really we couldn’t have wanted more from a job which made it one of the best firms in the country, and that’s why it was such a blow when the idiot who bought it out wrecked it until nothing was left and why the site where it was is now an industrial area, sad but true. Regards :-Jack Graham
yeah i remember i went to milan with him when he got a volvo f10 and all the trucks were mint, its a shame but everything is run by accountants now only interested in profit
