Good afternoon gentlemen [And Les Pullan ] Took my lady friend The ■■■■■ Chinky down to Manchester Airport this morning, on the return journey I stopped off at the services for a break and looking at the transport magazines in the shop I saw yet another Haulier has gone bust - Nigel Rice {Ithink they were from the Beverley area } I know they have been around for ages and always seemed to have very tidy wagons.Hauliers will soon be classed as a protected species!!

Hi Maxhagar, and all, true the transport industry is going like the pub trade eventualy there’ll be no-where to have a drink and all British lorry drivers will be on the dole because there’ll be no transport industry left, because no-one wants to be in a job where you cant even go for a p"ss without the boss or the ministry knowing, too many reglations, too many spies looking at everything you do, no other industry is so regulated by knob-heads who sit in offices thinking up “what can we do them for next” for, drink drive laws and smoking ban took all the trade away from pub landlords, and too many regulations have swamped the transport industry untill no-one wants the job, except foreigners who have been nicking our work for years with not one of our governments doing anything at all to stop it or help companies like other countries have in the past, my guess is that this country will be lost into oblivion in a few years time and no-one will do anything to try stop it, " so much for Great Britain" and so much for the great EU for absolutely “nothing”.
I guess you realise I get on my soabox on this subject, because it makes me sick because most of us dedecated our working lives for this country and all to be lost and wasted for the ■■■■■■■■■ in Brussels, and our governments. Sorry about ranting on but it makes me so sick and there’s nothing any of us can do about it. :-Mad Jack Graham.
PS :- Eventualy only Stobarts and Wetherspoons will be left, what a sad legacy to leave our kids.
Hi, to who-ever is still looking at A1 page, I’m about to start next week emailing and phoning round all the contacts I have, hopefully to to get some response to have another reunion this year, I’ve already asked Joyce & Billy Parky for some input, I’m asking for ideas of what you want, where , and when, hoping that we can if “required” change the venue and change the date instead of October so that we can interest more drivers and staff in our get-together.
A couple of weeks ago Dave Smith and Billy Parky came to see me, we had a few hours of going back in time, spilling diesel all over the floor and in general haveing a good laugh just like we did a couple of years ago when we all last met, which made me realise it was time to have another renuion, so how about it lads get in contact with as many as you can and let me know and we can get the ball rolling again, I can only contact the ones I know on my list on both email addresses and phone numbers, but I dont have them all so all I can do is try, so if I keep you all informed on the A1 page and you do the same, even if you phone me we will be making progress.
Just remember where and when you all want to go and we’ll do it.
Kind Regards :-Jack Phone :-07967 733880 Email grahamjack683@gmail.com
Hi all …wishing you all best wishes for the year. Time flies doesn’t it, mind have time on my hands now after hanging waggon keys up for the last time at Xmas. Seeing the old names I’d thought I’d forgotten brings the memory’s flooding back. Was Granville Daynes Tonys father, and Shaun his younger brother, who I believe left to go to Fields Packaging. Wasn’t it Tony who got thrown out of the cab after it was hit bye a crane jib, on the A58 to Wetherby. Can anyone remember Glasgow depots street name, have a vague recollection it was Camburn st. Tried to find it on Google Earth while seeing if I could recognize some of our old stamping grounds about Glasgow. Seem to think it was near a house JMR either bought or rented for the night trunk drivers to stop in.
Again all the best and keep polishing the brain cells we have left.

Hi Dave, Spent a lot of time in Glasgow during my driving days, now live here, over the last couple of years I have been in quite a few of the old haunts, non of them live up to the days when we used them, my favourite was Bettys Bar, Gallowgate, changed to Eastenders and is now the Phoenix, although I didn’t work for A 0ne was in the depot at Camburn St a couple of times, feel sure Tony’s brother was Chris that worked at Fields.

Hi lespullan…your probably right, names seem to get mixed up as the brain cells die off, especially nicknames. As for Betty’s Bar, such a quiet, peacefull and high class club…NOT… Every night was an experience, some you’d wish you could repeat and some most certainly not. For a month or so we would swap our flats for a tautliner and run chipboard from Cowie to Hillington for storage. Five nights a week at BBs, don’t know how we survived it…Dave.

Hi Dave, I used to spend four or five nights there at one time, delivering to Caterpillar’s at Tannockside could take a day and half to get unloaded, then back to English Electric, Bradford, and strait back up, happy days. .

Oh boy!, thanks for the memories Les, I’ve been rattling my brain trying to remember the name Betty’s bar for ages, although I was going abroad for many years I can still remember before when I was on the UK even when I worked for Fielders and then Chapmans before A1 bought them out, we all used to meet up in Betty’s bar swill as much down as we could, get a bollocking from the local plod then go to bed in the cab, but then we had to get ■■■■■■ because sleeping in a cab without a propper bed was’nt so comfortable as today, I say again Oh boy memories, but then that’s all we have at our ages, but at least they are good memories. :-Jack

Hi Jack, it was a great pub in its day, by the time you came out of Betty’s Bar you didn’t care what you slept on, the drivers of today will never experience the days and nights we had, not only in Glasgow, but in general the job has changed so much, I’m glad I had my days when it was hard and fun.
Just been down to Bradford today, spoke to a couple of old mates they are interested in the reunion plans and are going to spread the word, it gives you a feeling that your not wasting your time trying to organise this.

I’ve started calling around the ones I have, also emaild a few but some of them have come back as not delivered, which means they have changed there email address and untill I get a new one I wont be able to let them know, I spoke to Stuart Broughton who’s looking forward to seeing every-one again but not at the same venue, so it will be somewhere else next time, but it dont realy matter where as long as we get to see you all again, but keep looking on this page and it will all be here as soon as I can, also if any of you come up with a date different from the last one in October just to make a change it will be a help, the only problem with me at the moment is I might have to go back to the US for a few weeks at a moment’s notice, because I just found out my sister has been diagnosed with cancer, but hopefully all will be OK, but in the meantime I’ll still be trying to sort the reunion out. Hi all,
I’m looking at having the next reunion in August, if anyone has any other ideas please post it on this page, it will also be at a new venue instead of the Bold Privateer in Wrose, not sure where yet but any advice from you guy’s will be a help, I still think it’s an idea to ask drivers from other firms in the area who have had contact with A1, this is because there have been a couple of drivers from other firms interested in what we do, so to have them with us could be more interesting since we all worked together in those days.
I’ll wait for some interest from every-one and dont forget my contact

Well Betty’s bar has restarted a few memories, and kicked a few brains back onto action and remembering names most of us had forgotten, but be careful not to disrespect some of our drivers who cant be here any more, they were great times that we only can remember but it was how we let off steam after grafting all day. :- Jack
