Ive also found a photo of an A One F12, reg no DHD 366Y has the name Alec on the front.Hi Mark, any chance of posting that photo on here, thanks keith
Would that be Alec McKinnon ? A big bloke, a real nice bloke. If I remember he lived just down Gelherd Rd about a quarter of a mile towards the city, opposite another site of A1.
Hi Archie, yes you are right,Alec I think got this truck from chris marshell when he left,Jack may tell us,keith
There is only one Alec Kinnon, yes he is a big guy great to be with, getting older, cant drink as much as he used to, and guess what, he’s driving for!!, dare I say it!!!no I cant but they have a trucking program on TV, so it’s up to you to guess.
But he’s still a great guy to be with,!!!:-JackHi Jack,Alec is now retired ,I do not think there are any ex a one drivers left there now, keith
Hi Keith!, may-be your right not many went to work for them, but we cant hold it against them cos work’s work and we have to feed our families any way we can, but I doubt any ex A1 drivers are left there now, and thanks for telling me Alec Kinnon had retired I thought he hadnt long to go after the last reunion when he told me the same, it makes me wonder how many drivers would have carried on working after retirement age, I know I would!, had we all still been at A1, (but not with Magee), I stared going down hill when I stopped working and know I could have done another 5 years, but it’s too late now to be looking back, there was’nt a big turn round of drivers in the 25 years I was there, I remember Russell telling me that why have drivers learning at A1 and taking it to another firm when they can use it at A1, it makes sence and shows why it was a good firm to work for. :-Jack

Hi Guy’s, I have no access to my emails, cant remember my password, so will have to start all over again, so any-one who sent an email with-in the past 2 weeks wont be getting a reply, it’s been off for over 2 weks now, but will be setting up a new email address soon and will put it on this page. :-Jack Graham
When I was a kid, maybe 7 years old or so, we used to play in A One’s yard in Birstall on a weekend. I remember trailers lined up, some with tauts on, some loaded and some flat beds. We used to jump up all over them trailers. We never touched the units though, our dad’s were all drivers and we knew we should never climb on a unit.
We would have many an afternoon laid on the back of an A One flat trailer, bag of cola cubes, 3 gobstoppers and play marbles.
you see, this was around 1980 time and there was no CCTV or security guards.
happy days

They were happy days for A1 driver’s too, and your right there was no CCTV because the world had’nt become paranoid then, but there was security, it was called the night watchman in those days, but he probobly wouldnt have seen you playing in the yard, he’d more than likely been having a kip somewhere instead of in his shed, or may-be he was trapped in the shed on the top trailor park asleep.

Chris.
Looks a bit before my time at A1, I went there from Chapmans in 1974/5 but it looks like it was used for carrying RSJ’s from Dunlop & Rankin, I remember A1 had the contract before JG Fielder/Chamans took it on, there’s another picture on page 56 in this site loaded with RSJ’s. :-Jack
