“BEARING THE FRENCH BLOCKADE”
Around February/March 1980,the French truck drivers decided to go on strike (yet again), blocking all the main auto routes. Six A ONE drivers had to “park up” their vehicles at a Shell Filling Station at Bourge En Bresse, until the crisis was over. And make our way back home to Leeds.
We all returned home to England,to await the outcome of the strike.
This “GRAINY” film is a story of our journey. It was filmed by me on a “Super 8” Kodak cine film camera.
Drivers, STUART SUGDEN,KEN MALLINSON,STUART BROUGHTON, JACK MYERS, TERRY LEIGHTON and PETER SCULLIC caught the cross channel train ferry to Calais. It went on to Paris where we had to find our way from GARE DU NORD to GARE DE LYON. There we boarded the SNCF train to Bourg En Bresse.
(Unfortunately I couldn’t film S Broughtons comedy show) as we travelled, at great speed, and our sides were splitting!
We rejoined our vehicles, a few hours later and set off, in convoy, to ITALY.
We pass through Nantua,Annemasse and Cluses, before the long climb up to MONT BLANC TUNNEL
A new concrete road bridge has been made, and we travel up,in convoy,it’s built on.200ft pillars and SCARY! After a while, we rejoin the OLD ROAD.I film our convoy as it twists and turns up the road…As we climb higher, you can hear load bangs as the trailer catches long icicles hanging down from the overhanging rocks.
We travel through the tunnel to the halfway point, where it becomes MONTE BIANCO!!! ITALY. After that , it is downhill all the way through COURMEYER and AOSTA,
I made my deliveries and collections. My film then shows my return journey. Climbing up the VALLE D’Aosta, through COURMEYER, (note the ski lift) and down the other side of MONT BLANC, where the snow clearence trucks are working.
Onwards and upwards through France, passing all the british trucks parked beside “THE BAKE HOUSE” where many happy meals were eaten. (anybody remember)? No stopping today!! After that, you can see I am on the Parapherique round PARIS.
The last bit is of the me approaching the British customs!!!
“Nothing to declare”
End Of Film.
