“BEARING THE FRENCH BLOCKADE”

Around February/March 1980,the French truck drivers decided to go on strike (yet again), blocking all the main auto routes. Six A ONE drivers had to “park up” their vehicles at a Shell Filling Station at Bourge En Bresse, until the crisis was over. And make our way back home to Leeds.

We all returned home to England,to await the outcome of the strike.

This “GRAINY” film is a story of our journey. It was filmed by me on a “Super 8” Kodak cine film camera.

Drivers, STUART SUGDEN,KEN MALLINSON,STUART BROUGHTON, JACK MYERS, TERRY LEIGHTON and PETER SCULLIC caught the cross channel train ferry to Calais. It went on to Paris where we had to find our way from GARE DU NORD to GARE DE LYON. There we boarded the SNCF train to Bourg En Bresse.
(Unfortunately I couldn’t film S Broughtons comedy show) as we travelled, at great speed, and our sides were splitting!

We rejoined our vehicles, a few hours later and set off, in convoy, to ITALY.

We pass through Nantua,Annemasse and Cluses, before the long climb up to MONT BLANC TUNNEL
A new concrete road bridge has been made, and we travel up,in convoy,it’s built on.200ft pillars and SCARY! After a while, we rejoin the OLD ROAD.I film our convoy as it twists and turns up the road…As we climb higher, you can hear load bangs as the trailer catches long icicles hanging down from the overhanging rocks.

We travel through the tunnel to the halfway point, where it becomes MONTE BIANCO!!! ITALY. After that , it is downhill all the way through COURMEYER and AOSTA,

I made my deliveries and collections. My film then shows my return journey. Climbing up the VALLE D’Aosta, through COURMEYER, (note the ski lift) and down the other side of MONT BLANC, where the snow clearence trucks are working.

Onwards and upwards through France, passing all the british trucks parked beside “THE BAKE HOUSE” where many happy meals were eaten. (anybody remember)? No stopping today!! After that, you can see I am on the Parapherique round PARIS.

The last bit is of the me approaching the British customs!!!

“Nothing to declare”

End Of Film.

Hi Stuart. While all you lot got to go home by train Jack Tether and myself had to stay with our vehicle’s for the duration of the strike. Jack and me were up near Cluses, and all credit to the French drivers all the transit drivers were well looked after. by transit drivers i mean:: Germans Belgians Dutch ect ect. So all in all we all had a decent time. So many memories and at my age i have trouble remembering them in detail. Catch you later Stuart, take care of yourself. (Alan) :grimacing:

Hi Alan.Sorry about the mistakes.I have been trying to add the film that I took to go with the story and hadn’t intended the story to get on the forum so fast!!!
I will try again soon?!!
I was reading my diary today, and found one or two story’s that might be of interest to our viewers■■? Don’t want to be done for

Just been reading some of your memoirs (really good stuff!) Do you or any of your A One buddies remember a traction firm from Bristol called Costa Blanca Transport? I recall back in the 80’s that they always had A One trailers and I used to backhaul them from the North West to anywhere South - A One must have spent a fortune on advertising in the old ABC Guide (colour photos et al!)

Just had another thought about A One (circa 1982/3 ish) does anyone remember the dad of an old mate of mine who used to do some subby work out of Trafford Park? His name was Andy Smith (a Scotsman, who spent most of his life in Dublin, but lived in Swinton!) He used to drive an old column change red Saviem, and I think Andy junior (we both went to Warrington Tech College) drove it sometimes - he being about 16 or 17 at the time! I haven’t seen either of them for decades, but I believe Andy junior, who was a fitter with the Hino group, went on to be an owner driver himself (and am sure they’re still around the Manchester area)
