A1, A14 split - Brampton Hut

Trundled down this stretch for the first time in a few months earlier today.
Used to use this bit of road a lot 12 months ago and the nightly roadworks were often a pain in the rump.
Anyway, the new layout as you come off the A1 north, fanny about over 2 roundabouts and join the A14 Westbound near Brampton Hut seemed a bit convoluted and unnecessarily messy.
Why would the road planners not design an easier merge? Was it an uncompromising land owner?
Not a major gripe, merely an observation [emoji846]

The A14…

Should really be the M14. But was mostly a mish mash of dual carriageway that whenever it met another major road it became a nightmare. It’s origional ending at Catthorpe was a complete farce, I don’t think you could have come up with a worse solution than they did. Brampton Hut and the M11 junction at Cambridge were more ‘what the ■■■■ are we gonna do here?’ designs.

The residents of Huntingdon must be breathing a sigh of relief.

I agree with Hiabman, considering the thousands of square yards of new road laid at that junction why a normal off slip for A1 N to A14 WB couldn’t have been put in place is anyone’s guess, wonder if the same mob who designed the original Catthorpe catastrophe (resulting in countless deaths and injuries) was involved?

When the A604 was built, they left space to make it wider, that’s why nothing was ever built either side, but different government overtime just kept overlooking it, Then when it was decided to build A14, the viaduct at Huntingdon was deemed rotten, so hence the Nice new shiny road,which was going to be a toll road, that was dropped early on, even when Felixstowe expanded, saying the road was suitable, when they first muted the A14 towards cathorphe is was going to be 3 lane, but budgets were changed, Brampton Hut is like it is due to the plans to extend the A1m from Baldock to Peterborough, Also a committee of over paid engineers and planners also doesn’t help…

Kind of obvious really.
They want to keep the workers in work.
So.thevw done what they did.
.and next phase to keep.the workers employees they will dig it all up and start again

Agreed. Its ridiculous having to continue along the m6 a loop back just to go south. I can only assume that as suggested, they plan To cause more chaos shortly to do some more digging.
