A twist in the tail?

jimti:

I am a bit confused as to how a truck can go passed this sign though.

Me too. Surely the driver of any vehicle wider than 6’ 6" would be committing an offence by passing this sign? If access is allowed for the factory shouldn’t there be either an except for access sign, or even better a sign saying ‘Except for access to Hollingsworth & Vose’, or a sign indication the restriction begins in ■■■ yards or x miles?

bloody good read and you had the balls to tell everyone.
well done mate seems all the pro drivers havn’t retired yet

brilliant use some wd 40 on those balls of steel . posting that diary was excellent the humour was great . sad about the dog at the end if that was a movie my mrs would be crying by now
roll on the next instalment

very good piccys and story…ur a big man to write and tell that story on here lol

nice bit of reversing. poor ol’ pup though.

All I can do is echo what others have already said…Brilliant read Mike, I was sad for the dog though, I’ve seen some horrors on my travels as a copper, but it’s always the animals that bring a lump to the throat.

Top bit of reversing though mate!

Good read Mr. C,I thought you did know it all. :astonished:

Some of the places I’ve taken a container though,it would’nt have surprised me in the slightest if the place was actually at that dead end.I probably would have done the same.
and I do know it all,I’ve been told

Keep up the good work, you’ll be writing a book soon.

Cracking read as usual Mike.:grimacing:

I’d agree with those who said it takes real guts to post something like that.

Just thinking about it, what else could you have done? IMHO- nothing!!

You bothered to do some careful research and then encountered a sign that suggested that it’s illegal for you to go any further.

IMHO, the most telling comment so far is this:

I do hope those cops don’t summons you, cos I can’t work out which law you’ve broken.

Wouldn’t you think that the cutomer would warn their suppliers of the correct route to their place
:bulb: After all, it’s in their own interests. Duh :exclamation:

I think you will find that it was the road without the width limit that found him stuck, he took the other route because of that sign but after reversing had to go through the width limit to reach the customer

Hi jimti, that’s the way I’d read it too mate.

What a story. Ive been close to tears in similar situations, I guess youve just got to keep a sense of humor about you. Container work always seems to lead down dark narrow country roads!

Terrible to hear about the dog. Animals running about on the road are a real nightmare as you just dont know what theyre going to do. A dead animal is bad enough but seeing one injured and obviously suffering is heartbreaking. I hope he didnt suffer for too long, bless him…

I remember seeing a terrier huddled in the middle of a junction on the A5 near Towcester a few years back. It was dark and pouring with rain and cars were speeding past very close to him, looked like hed already been hit once. I pulled over and went back on foot to see if I could do anything but although I looked around there was no sign of him anywhere. Sounds stupid but I thought about the terrier for a while after, wondering what happened to him.

…as above, I can’t think of any offences committed…just 'cos the prissy female copper said she “wasn’t pleased” doesn’t mean anything. I’d have told her how pleased I was myself and invited her to come up with a sensible solution…bet she couldn’t! (Cheeky cowbag).

To cheer you up, Click here for a very similar ■■■■-up I made 20 years ago…

I agree Mike didn’t break any laws taking the road he ended up stuck on, there were no signs prohibiting him from taking that road - no weight, height, width or length restrictions in place so he could quite legally use it. After escaping from the predicament he had to go past the width restriction sign to reach the customers premises The sign shows a prohibition for vehicles over 6’ 6" therefore any driver of a vehicle over that width who passes the sign is committing an offence. That sign effectively makes it impossible for a vehicle over 6’ 6" wide to legally access Hollingsworth & Vose.

Well you got big balls of steel mike I will give you that one!

1 for bieng so relaxed and proffesionall about your tight sticky situation!

2 for showing everyone else how NOT to do it!

Well done m8!

Only 1 complaint tho! Why the sad lassie ending!?

Poor puppy ,

I was enjoying the read till then,

Goes to show no matter how bad your day is ,
someone else is always worse off

A song for Mike.

As this is not an uncommon occurence and given the trouble it causes when drivers are misfortunate enough to take the same route I think the least the company could do is put a sign up by the width restriction pointing out that HGVs actually have to take that road for them. :unamused:

Cracking read though MikeC :exclamation:

all that is needed is a sign in vilage company x this way

Mike-C:
You can’t tell me nothing, i’ve been there done it, seen it and got the tee shirt

As above    listened to an ‘expert’. “No problem drive, they all turn here, you wont have a problem…” yeh right! Why did I listen to this [zb], nearly 30 years experience and I do this, why!

Tiger ( )

Some very interesting and amusing replies here, and i’m glad to see some other ■■■■ ups !!
Right some of you said the company should put signs up? And if i’d just read this i would of said the same. However, i did have a little info before hand which makes this harder to fathom out !! I’d seen this when i googled the company!

Story is, there was signs up. A few years ago some newer residents of the village complained about them and they had to be removed as they had no planning permission. To date the permision is going to be accepted. When i was stuck the company rang the council, and said we need these signs allowed desperatley. The council said, well you can put some temporary ones up until its sorted out properly !! Doh !!!

mekong:
a bit late now mike :open_mouth: , but if you had been one of the many that post asking for directions in this instance you would have saved yourself a lot of greiff, i live in staveley and my house is on one of your pics. opp shop and behind the trees. i will see my mate tonite who works at that spot an get rundown on what really happened.

The only problem with that is i don’t always get chance to get on the net and ask, most often (as we all do) i just get an address and go. By now you will probably have the story. You will probably know the girl who helped me? The girl who lives on the farm up Hall lane and has a blue Landrover, she was a trucker too. It was only thanks to her for sorting me out a tractor that i got out, and she made a lot of fone calls to find one. It was then her husband who came and helped/directed when we where getting out the mess. They where both brilliant. As everybody was helpfull and polite too, at no time did anyone give me any negative vibes or anything. I did like her take on how closely related the Village was…‘if you kick someone in the leg here, the whole village limps!!’. You’ll probably know the lane i was in very well, its a miracle i got out hey?!!
