Probably for the same reason you wouldn’t ideally have wanted to use a 180 Gardner in a 38 tonner and not many hills on its route and they couldn’t fit an engine big enough to provide an ideal durable 10 hp / 30 lb/ft + per tonne under the bonnet anyway.
Also think that triple weighs a bit more than 88 t gross.
