A stressful job?

There’s a lot of talk going around that driving for a living is stressful. I just can’t see it.

As a new driver, it wasn’t long ago that I was being dissuaded from entering this industry because “it’s not like it used to be” and “it’s not worth the hassle” and all that crap. I’m glad I took no notice and cracked on with getting my licences anyway. Best move I ever made, I haven’t done a day’s work since I left my old job four months ago.

Sitting in a traffic jam is about as stressful as getting your balls massaged by two hot Swedish blondes while a third feeds you melted chocolate off her ■■■■■■■. In other words, not that stressful.

So, who thinks it is a stressful job and why? If you do think it’s stressful, have you ever done a proper job where you were required to work for your pay?

Peace and love,
SCF.

I think this is about the least stressful job it is possible to find. The people saying they get stressed it is usually self inflicted because they blow tiny things that don’t matter and are beyond their control out of all proportion.

I’ve been doing this for over 27 years and it is well over 20 years since it caused me any stress, before that it was self inflicted stress.

last driving job was stressful, like neil says a lots of it self inflicted. made a promise to myself not to get like that again and so far ive not, plus the workload is easier to cope with.
working as a deckhand on the irish ferry was stressful and my time in the army was long periods of boredom with short periods of stress…lol

Hmmm
How if you are 200 Miles from Home and just 3 hour driving Time left?

Well then your not going home, no point in getting stressed about it, stress doesn’t change anything day to day but it will lead you to an early death.

last time i was stressed was the first time i had to go into london with a muti drop but now no matter were i go or what im doing i just roll with it if its going to happen it will and no amount of stress will help

Surely it also depends on the type of work your doing?

I was recently doing Rigid multidrop which I hated. That was stressfull, some was probably self inflicted but there was a level that seemed to just be psrt of the job

Digging through pallets of stock for 1 box that was never there in the first place but you didn’t know that becuase the guy who does the drivers paper work in the nights never printed it out. Handballing a shed load of stock because you don’t have any cages, pump trucks or sack trucks.

Getting stressed just thinking about it. I think I need an hour with those 3 Swedish blondes

what if you are carrying cream cakes?
what if you run low on LPG, then have to switch to diesel?
what if the train gets there before you?
you may have to go 2 hours south of crick, and then,
back again?
then you slip on some ice. stop filming, stop filming. the lift axle is down, but i’m so [zb]ing stupid i leave it down. no [zb]ing wonder it’s slipping.
it’s so intense, the stress, the stress, arghhhhhhhhh.

HELL YEAH !! It’s a stressful job, take tonight for example, done an eleven hour shift, only managed four hours break, had to open the curtains twice and one of the poles was a bit sticky, and as if all that ain’t bad enough some of the traffic lights I needed to go past were actually on red !! Can you believe it !! And then to make things worse when I got home there were only 9 bottles of Stella in the fridge and I usually have 10 ggrrrrr !! I can’t wait to go to bed and get this awful day out of the way !! Fingers crossed for a better shift tonight :imp:

It has to be the least stressful job going!

If I didn’t have my licenses, the thought of having to actually do a proper days work in another job, fills me with absolute dread!

It’s only stressful if you let traffic etc… Get to you. In which case, you should really be looking at changing career!

A trifle stressful right now if you are cruising the M74 in a 16 footer loaded with polystyrene

Any job with a time critical element to it can be stressful, also any job where you have to rely on other people to do their job properly can be stressful if they don’t do it. Agree with self-inflicted to some extent, e.g. whether you allow these things to irritate you or not.

I would find that part EXTREMELY stressful, but very nice

not really, i’d be still at carlisle parked between 2 lorries.

i used to get stressed out but nowadays just think " it will get there when it gets there " i will do my best to get it there ontime but if its late… tough ive done my bit.

if you want stress try double manning, ok if you trust the other mans ability, not so good when hes an idiot or a drunk as it takes time to rid yourself of these people even if you just refuse to work with them in the future. worst one the idiot who thought he did not have time to wait behind an italian on the approach to ventimiglia down the mountain only to get to the toll booth with all the brakes on fire, first trip out with a brand new trailer, and 21 ton of bang on, its no wonder i have grey hair.

You met limeyphil then.

If your brakes are on fire going down a mountain that’s not stress, it’s pure adrenalin fuelled excitement.

I got a bit stressed last night. When I got back to my yard I had to peel my arse out of my comfy chair and walk 200 yards in the cold to my car. It’s about time the public realised what we lorry drivers have to contend with on a daily basis.

I used to get stressed all the time. Now I just dont let anything get to me. I did get a bit stressed with a manager on new years eve though when I ended up in Rugby truckstop for the night.

All jobs carry some stress. But driving is no worse or better than sitting in an office all day staring at a computer screen. I find driving downright boring at times but office work would be even worse…

Stressful? It depends what you’re doing and where you’re driving really. Multi-drop tends to be worse than trunking but I wouldn’t do multi-drop - so not for me it isn’t!

Basically driving is OK, just hard work sometimes dealing with the planks you come across at RDC’s, firms etc. A lot of whom appear to have the brains of a retarded amoeba…

Best to not get stressed too much, they don’t pay you enough to let it affect your health…

I agree with most of the comments here but there are moments when it can be quite stressful, getting lost in a busy city centre with a 40 foot trailer when you haven’t got a clue which way to go and the streets are getting narrower can be a tad buttock clenching

That’s not stressful, that’s an extreme sport and people who partake in that don’t do stress man.
