A sad way to go

It sounds like the poor old boy was confused.

R.I.P Pops. :frowning:

Must be a scary thing to see a vehicle heading towards you.

Sorry, i think it is time we had an age limit on the driving licenses. I have seen many cases of this where an elderly driver got confused and decided to turn around on a slip road and try and get back onto the A1. This is because the slip road had a NO ENTRY (on the road in white)sign facing away from him and got confused, even though the NO ENTRY sign was for other road users coming the other way. The driver was 82 and just driven up from Portsmouth :unamused: when he told me her set off at 10am and when i spoke to him at the road side it was coming on for 8:30pm. In the end i had to get a family member out as the male was not in a fit state to drive.

I am not looking forward to getting a phone call about my wife’s grandad who is an ex D -Day war vet and is 87 years old and he drives to wales twice a year.

People might not agree though but there should be a cut off age to when you should give up your license

RIP opa

dont agree with a cut off age to stop driveing at all , but do think that people should be assessed after a certain age

face it the majority of ■■■■ driveing around without a clue as to what their doing are far younger and you see it everyday from the blank looks on their mugs as their in auto mode skutling around

age dosnt mean a thing a lot of the time as everyone is different my neighbour is 78 and still rides his motorbike on a sunny day,. he can still hold his own rideing against us youngns as he calls us

there has been an age limit of 70 for years, after this age you have to renew licence yearly following a medical

Not quite. AFAIK there’s no actual medical to pass, you just got to get your GP to sign you off as fit.

I’ve said this before, older drivers don’t necessarily need a medical but I do think a compulsory eyesight test every couple of years might be a way forward. Poor eyesight and deteriorating peripheral vision account amongst elderly car drivers for a lot of the SMIDSY accidents suffered by bikers. And not all older drivers are necessarily incompetent;my ex-GF’s father drove till he was nearly 90, it was only falling and breaking his hip that stopped him in the end. He was a safe driver who thought nothing of driving the 250 mile trip down here from his home.

You got to remember that many elderly people are still wary of going to the doctor unless they have to, a product of their pre-NHS upbringing. And as they get older they need their cars more and more. We’ll all be old one day (God willing) best to be careful what we wish for.

Very sad, I saw the signs that the bridge was closed but assumed it was the weather which could have been a factor.

To put an age limit is wrong when you have limited mobility and poor health the car is a lifeline, for the most part elderly drivers are considerate and careful drivers and drive slowly because their eyesight and reactions are not what they once were, how often do you see elderly drivers going too fast or too close and not paying attention, not many.

As a motorcyclist I can count on one hand in the last ten years when I have felt the urge to remove the door mirror of an old 'uns car, on the other hand every time you swing your leg over the bike somebody will be 3ft of your rear fiddling with their phone and not looking at the road.

A bloke in Burton on Trent was squashed and killed by a Trent Barton Bus, he was on a pedestrian crossing, the bus was on the pavement on the wrong side of the road, whether he had swerved or had a seizure is unclear, but I doubt the bus driver was 88

I agree - about 17 would be right.
You can’t put an age on it - I’ve seen the most stupid things from drivers of all ages. I know some excellent elderly drivers and some bad ones. I would be interested to see the statistics - AFAIK 18 -25 year old males still have the highest accident rate.

RIP old boy… i believe the driving test itself should be toughened up as its far too easy, and has hardly changed since it came out, roads and cars and attitudes have changed.
A lot of the old uns never passed a test, same as i didnt for my HGV, but did for my car.
An age related medical is all thats needed, and 70 is the norm, but in saying that, i know drivers who have sleep apnoea, who have diabetes, who have heart problems, but still manage to fool the system, of course its not to be condoned, but a 5 minute health check can fool most doctors. I myself am finding it more and more difficult even though i only work 3 days a week, tiredness is the biggest problem, and a lack of sleep seems to be the norm for most oldies, on saying that, a power nap used to also be the norm, until the poxy RDC`s decided that drivers shouldnt sit in their cabs, but instead sit in a chilled warehouse…but i wont get started on that one…

Oh it is.

Happened to me returning home from work just the other week, met a red Honda Jazz coming down the slip road to join the motorway the wrong way, I moved into the middle of the road and started waving my hands and flashing at her. She then stopped and done a 3 point, ok a 50 point turn on the slip road.

I had one on the A465 a couple of years ago. I phoned plod who asked where it was. I told them and their reply was “they’ll be off our patch quite soon, so we’ll pass it on.” They really didn’t seem bothered.
