A.S.Rawlings Transport Ltd

I can go back as far as 1971 when I started at Rawlings but I don,t recall the name.If he was there at some time,no doubt somebody will remember him.Any more clues.Regards Charlie

Hi Charlie I worked with this guy years ago, he was the worlds worse driver the man didn’t know when to change gear, he messed lorries up on a daily basis they spent there life in the workshop, but his claim to fame was he had worked for Rawlings, I think if he did he must have been sweeping the yard. We had all worked it out that what he came out with was the same stuff that came out the back of a bull  but it would be nice to know if we were right or not.

regards

John.

Hi John.Yes,if he had ever been there I am sure somebody will remember him.Watch this space.Regards Charlie

Day 2 wasn’t much better, we opted to carry on to the “Atlantique” for steak and eggs (instead of stopping at Vivonne)…“Pas de personne dans la cuisine M’sieur!” came the retort, short 'n sweet…but they did have an amazing array of sticky buns on the counter. Poor substitute but that will do…for now. It was bloody cold out there too but at least it wasn’t raining.

Hiya Gazzer, Now “It was bloody cold out there too but at least it wasn’t raining” << Are you camping in a hedge■■? No food ■■? I suppose Ian has been using his sandwiches ■■>? And have you both walked all the way from Calais << Seems like to me you are not having any fun . Maybe I will have to come and rescue you.
Have fun you2

Whilst I get around to posting a couple of traniht fotos from our trip down:

August Bank Holiday Sunday at The Wheatsheaf, Shirrell Heath, Tim Sheppards pub for anyone that want to turn up!

A detour was required down to The Quays at Bordeaux. How it has all cleaned up, posh Cafes, Tram system, walkways etc. It was an opportunity to walk the dog and grab a coffee. Ian trying to remember the little eating and drinking dens.

As you can see, it even looks cold1

Down thru The Forest, we were getting peckish, the sticky buns a la Atlantique wearing off. Now, where shall we stop for lunch…Castets was about appropriate. A slurp of a Kir, pay up front for 4 courses and a coffee at 14€ each. A magnificent cold buffet selection, a real steak for main, mit fritz, fromage blanc et desert aux choix! Vin du Pays…not too much, driving on remember, watered down with some Lourdes holy water.

Paying our last respects to the coffers of the French Autoroute Confiscation Society, we sailed thru the relatively non existent border. Spanish customs now where the weighbridge used to be and thats about it. I think the French have left the place altogether.
Opting to follow the N1, for adventure not economy! Plenty of snow lay around all the way to Madrid.
Making reasonable time we pushed on as it was still cold outside. Straight thru Madrid, M30 to the NIV. Hunger leading to an obligatory stop south of Ocana was sufficient to pave the way home. After the lunchtime feast, the Spanish equivalent was a disappointment.

The rain came after Valdepenas, swiftly turning to snow. Past Bailen, Jaen, Granada. We did pass thru some contra flow works but without realising that the other side of the Autovia was non existent so I found out later in the week in fotos in the local paper (due to rain damage).

As we left the Autovia at Casabermeja i called Shirley to make the rendezvous at the end of our track, 03.30. She was sort of pleased to see us! It had also just stopped raining. Ian had another 40 mins to drive.

Not the best of journeys but then isn’t that the case when driving abroad? You dont know you’ve had a good trip until it ends. By then the opportunity to make any record of it has passed.

Hello gazzer @ Ian,
Bordeau looks very very clean, what has happened to the world now ■■ A few years ago you could have a nice little walk along the The Quays and meditate about being a nice good boy . Mind you the dog looks fedup lol. The food you had were not too dear makes a change.
If the weather was that cold You didn,t pop into Irun for a day ■■ Iff you had taken the day off by the time you had a few drinkies , you could have then driven all night lol.
At least you an Ian @ the dog were all OK
Bye for now

I have some friends who live here that holiday in Skopolos, last known lurkings of Micky Olio.

I have asked them to see if anyone knows of him. Not a big island and must have a bit of a tight knit expat community. Mind you, Olio always merged in with the locals…to avoid the “01’ers"etc”.

gazzer.
Hi Gary hope you are well,Mamma Mia the movie was shot on that small island if you look closely you can see Mick Olio in the background playing with his bouzouki !!
Regards Richard

Hi all its gone a bit quiet on here of late thought i would revive it and see who is about

Ive not had a chance to see MamaMia Richard, maybe when I’m 70 I’ll find the time to sit in front of the tele and watch it!

Not had any feed back on “Olio” yet.

You cheeky bloody nipper Gazzer. The only reason you look younger than 70 is the botox and the facelift.I know you asked me to say nothing but you overstepped the mark when you so cruelly insulted Richard. He can,t help his looks and figure.Regards Charlie

Just to get us back up the top:

Olio was not located on Skopolos. My contacts will ask again when they return there.

Charlie is buying the beer at “The Bash”. Due to an error. See the Southampton thread.

Tim said he had “hundreds” of fotos from daysgone but as he is a technophobe cant do anything with them as they are prints/slides. Is anyone willing to pay a visit to him and make an effort to digitise them (take foto with camera, works for me and Ainacs Pat) so that they may be drip fed on here? I can’t do anything until August…assuming Ian allows me some time off!

Soon be end of August, all those that were only popping in for a quick drink, to pacify the Mrs. can get there stories straight! NO NAMES, NO NAMES.

I,M starting to feel sick so may not be able to make it in August. If I don,t turn up please make a note of how much I owe and I will pop in sometime and pay. May be a little while.Do you think Tim will have any photos of him actually working? Never saw him doing anything myself.Regards Charlie

Probably not Charlie, when you are the fotograffer you never appear in the fotos so if you are taking the foto are you actually working?

If you and Spadger start a savings club for an Ole Boys outing at your asylum, 'praps you could make ends meet?

Hi Gary.I,ve had a word with Terry And the phrase " Kneecap him" cropped up.Will try and talk him out out of it.Keep looking over your shoulder.Regards Charlie

Spadger had trouble finding Customs in Milan so I dont spose he will find us in the mountains of southern Spain. Maybe in the lanes of Medstead or Brown Candover! watchout for the Scania 470!

I thought we ought to bring this thread back to life.Where has everyone gone■■?

Some are dead or dying. Some are retired. Some have skipped the country and only return to take work away from decent hardworkimg English chaps (Terry Sparrow) who is desperate for gainfull employment.Roll on August Bank holiday.Skin and hair will be flying.Looking forward to it.Will any of the Southampton Mafia be pushing the boat out? Don,t think so! Regards Charlie
