A question from a NIF :

Would a four wheeler Volvo FH GT unit professionally converted to a four
wheeler rigid with a 28 foot box body solely for living in and show purposes
(ie. never for hire or reward) require an O-licence? If so, how much would
it cost and would the owner need to be a CPC holder? Also, what is the
current annual VED for such a vehicle please (18 tonne) ?

MTIA

No O-Licence would be required and it would be taxed as private HGV (Currently £165 a year.)

As an O-Licence is not required, you would not need to be a CPC holder.

The vehicle would however still be subject to plating and testing by the man at the ministry!

and apparentley there are a boatload of new rules and regs for camper conversions

Not for self conversions m8. As with a lot of “regs” they only apply to those that do it as a trade or business. As far as I am aware & from experience, the only stipulations are by the insurance company that insist gasbottles are secured in a fireproof area. Our last coach conversion was inspected by the buyers insurance company & passed with flying colours, every bit of it was done by us as a family & NO “professional” help was given on any of it (except the fact that it had electrics installed & I used to be a sparky, but he didnt even ask for a test & inspection report .

As has been said:

No operators license
No CPC
No Tacho recordings required but the head must work properly
Speed limiter is required
HGV licence is required
Standard HGV ministry test (but they are very “understanding” if they know it’s only a toy

Road tax (private HGV) - same as a car.

ToyTown,

How did you insure your unit. Did you manage to insure it as a private HGV? If so, through whom?
