A Perhaps Obvious, but important Lesson

Today we had an assessment booked for 11.00am. The young lady drove up from Brighton to Chelmsford which took her just over 2.5 hours for the journey.

When she arrived I done the usual licence check only to find she had ticked the C1E box on question 1 of the form D2 instead of category C.

She already had a C1 from passing the car test prior to 1997 and thought that C1E was the next one up.

Obviously we could not let her drive the truck with the wrong entitlement.

We remind people to check their licence carefully but still mistakes are made. She even told us on the phone the licence was correct. She still has over an hour’s drive back to go…

In all fairness the form D2 is not particularly clear about which box to tick and for years I have thought it an unneccessary question as the DVLA might just as well automatically put all the provisional groups on. But they don’t

Take care as her problems would have been worse if today was the start of a course and not just an assessment.

An expensive lesson still with the travel she has already done

But as they say " Measure twice cut once "

So always check then check again if in doubt ask

Do hope she gets it sorted soon

A similar danger is when the phone rings “I’ve passed my theory, I want to book the practical”. That’s always good to hear. But be aware that the person can hold only a C1 provisional and still pass the CAT C theory test. Same applies with D1 and D (bus and coach).

So I always ask folk to read the list of entitlements from the counterpart. And then it’s best if I can get a scanned copy or photocopy.

I agree with John that the question is daft; they may as well just stick the lot on and save a lot of hassle.

Good luck all, Pete
