I don’t have issues with young driver, old drivers, female drivers, black or brown drivers or anyone else for that matter,
live and let live is my attitude
Clearly the insurance companies do have an issue with young drivers though, otherwise there wouldn’t be an insurance problem would there
Oh, and of course we have every right to question the government, we do after-all pay their salaries, not saying it will do much good though
It is an unfortunate fact that insurance premiums work on trends and statistics. If a lot of young drivers make high value claims, then they see it as a high risk to insure young drivers as they are predominantly likely to make a large claim.
It is just a fact of life. Young drivers are a high risk to insurance companies.
It is because of this that employers are charged a higher premium to add young drivers to their policy. It just means that you have to be more convincing to the employer that it is worth the risk to them.
Bigger operators have the opportunity to self-insure by depositing a bond with the Supreme Court. So it is actually the employer (as, in this case, there is no insurance company) who is discriminating against young drivers.
Sadly, statistics for car accidents do weigh heavily against young males 17 - 20yrs. Even more sadly, I don’t know of any figures for male 17 - 20 yrs old HGV drivers. Annecdotal evidence is that there is no problem. To me, it’s a mindset thing. I made the case a long time ago on this forum in favour of some young drivers and don’t wish to totally derail this thread by repeating it.
But, in any case, all the best to anyone taking up this contact from John - - who, in turn, should be thanked for making the effort to publicise these positions. Pete
Are insurance company will put young drivers on but the excess goes up a grand! So all we do is the young drivers sign a deceleration that if the have a accident which is there fault they pay. To me this makes sence as the young drivers think twice when taking the vehicles out. also gives the young drivers a chance.

Good luck to all that apply & as Peter said thanks to John for doing this
Sorry to say it has been the case for a long time that insurance company say over 25 even for a small van as I did run 3 several years back & it was the case then
Sam I do agree there are some good young drivers out there & some very sensible 17-20 year olds but there are some not so sensible of that age group but both male & female ( as I have said I do have kids 1x23 1x 22 also have a few nephews around 13-21 so yep can understand )
One strange thing about insurance for young people is that the cost of insuring a a training vehicle didn’t rise when the age limit for LGV dropped from 21 to 18.
Nobody has yet offered their services on the thread for the C+E vacancy. I contacted some of our passes today from the past few months that live reasonably locally to see how they were finding the job scene for newly qualified drivers and to be honest most were up and running as drivers. A mixture of how they got the 1st chance including being recommended by family or friends, through the jobcentre, and a few agency starts.
The general feeling is that although the old experience chestnut rears its head regularly it is about being in the right place at the right time. If the company needs a driver at the moment you are asking there is a very good chance of an opportunity.

Also if they think your face fits
There is a company in this area that has just taken on 2 drivers ( ok old hands but still they have left other driving jobs so there is now some movement )
Huge thanks to John, I was contacted yesterday by the company’s transport manager.
I’m meeting him start of next week and i’m reasonably confident a full time position should come out of it.
Considering the apparent news of john’s history,
the 2 drivers i;ve met and worked with that where trained by him, the contact i’ve had, (briefly in person at the chelmsford test centre) and via this forum.
He’s had some crap in the past but he’s still a good and honourable man despite setbacks that would ■■■■■■■ some of us.
So,
Thankyou john
and when i save up enough for my class 1 your going to be rather high on my list of people to call
I remember from one of your posts back in Mid December you was looking. I was suprised you weren’t in there earlier as you was saying you was contacting them one evening. So that’s awesome they’re interested
Best of luck with it and hope it all works out well for you bud!
I’ll be tapping you up for any opportunities in there in a couple of years lol!
