A lucky couple days I would say!

Well, it’s been a funny couple days. and seeing as I’ve not been able to stop smiling for ages I thought I may aswell share with everyone the happy go lucky news.

As many who have seen my pictures thread, know I was out last week on a photoshoot run for my final exam thing for my photography work. Needless to say after today I stand by it when I say photography has been the best life decision I have EVER made!!!

Yesterday I went down to plasmor with some pictures to say ‘Thanks’ for letting me get pictures of the trucks and being kind enough to help me out. I got talking with the receptionist when I first walked in and she seemed very impressed with the pictures and we laughed and joked about me getting ■■■■ wet through getting pictures (See picture thread to know what I mean   ) then the MD came through the door, again looked through the pictures talking of how great they look etc then the TM comes through the other door and starts looking at the picture and looking rather impressed with them. He handed them back thinking I was just showing them to him, but I was like no for keeps :grimacing: :grimacing: So he took them back saying thank you and he and the receptionist argued where the pictures were going, either in the canteen or in his office   But he insisted I go back after I get my results to let them know how I got on. I then I asked about the vacancy in the company I heard about in the sales office to whether I would be able to do it as any job is a job and they gave me an application form saying to fill it in and hand it back as soon as.

Today, I took the application form back down as I only live up the road from the yard (Very convenient!!!  ) then gone back to college, to find out I have some outstanding ICT work to do as another one of my units has been selected for viewing and some bits need completing, even though I was told everything was fine :imp: :imp: But whatever, needs must.

I went down to Allied Glass today with the rest of the pictures as I was going to call into the other blokes firm to hand in the pictures as well.

I called into Allied Glass and waited about 10 minutes for the Transport Manager to finish his sandwich to come out. Eventually he came out and we spoke and I let him look at the pictures, I only took 3 this time as I didn’t think they would be too interested in the pictures, How wrong was I :open_mouth: :open_mouth: The pictures I took down, he absolutely loved them and started talking about whether I could get some more and that because he thinks they would be good for marketing so I am going to try stick my orr in and get some money for my troubles if he is thinking of using them for marketing purposes. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

One of the pictures was of a sub-contracter (Volvo FH Globe XL in Picture thread) and said he is going to send that picture to the subiies boss because he thinks the boss would love it so maybe another company who may want me to get more pictures   But it sounds promising indeed so hopefully something good can come from it

The old boy in the green foden pulled up again, and I thought here’s my chance to hand over the pictures see what they think. Well a spring of luck was I having!!! So I walked over and watched him back the truck into the yard and his son came out, and me and his son got talking and showed him the pictures I took (about 6-8 pics) they were very impressed and again like the TM did at plasmor handed me them back, and again told them no they are to keep as a way of saying thanks :grimacing: :grimacing: I got some more pictures of the trucks after they were cleaned but only the 4 ton foden and the mickey mouse foden!!!

But well this is where I have struck lucky I think!!!

Talking to the owners son, he offered to take me in the lorry down to london (Not into london but on the outskirts) for the day out give me a change of scenery and to take my camera to get some pictures of the sights. Now who am I to turn down an offer of a lifetime !? So I said yeah sure, then he opened up the workshop doors to let me get some pictures of the trucks that have been cleaned. We talked about the shows that he’s going too and ones he recomend to go too.

He offered to take me home as his dad (the boss) sub-contracts from plasmor and he was going to collect his trailer for down south tomorrow. He went down and hitched up the trailer missing my house as I forgot to say stop  So when he hitched the trailer as we were leaving, we exchanged numbers as I’m to ring him next tuesday seeing if he is going to London and if I can tag along etc!!

So what’s the outcome. For a mere 4 hours work.
I have successfully gained the respect from 3 companies.
Have got my application in for a full time job at one of the companies.
I have a possible deal for some of my photography work with the second company.
And the third company I have an offer to go on the road and learn some tricks of the trade, get some photographs for you people on here!! and a potential future employer for when I get into the haulage game because the boss’s son knows I want to be a driver and the boss does, he was suggesting to me aswell that I could take my hgv at 18 so whether that was a hint to get my license and see about a job, but I will soon see!!! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

There are opportunities out there. After my run of luck I am glad something has turned up.

I also have 2 interviews for my apprenticeships.
One with Volvo on the 6th of June
and one with a college to do mechanics and thats on the 8th!!!

I will be posting some of the pictures on here soon in another picture thread. So keep a look out. And to any young people on here. I suggest if you want a start, to get round the local hauliers small and big. Because you never quite know what can surprise you. Today thankfully has been a big surprise and a good one at that and has potentially given me a good shot in the haulage industry WITHOUT the aid of parents & family   So just bare that in mind

Cheers

Glad to hear of your improved fortunes. If ever there was a case of “you make your own luck” then this is a perfect example. What you’ve managed to do, inadvertently, is massage the ego of the operators with pretty pictures. Most drivers, owner drivers and larger operators love pictures of their trucks. You’ve hit exactly the right spot. Some will look on it purely as an ego boost, others will consider them a valuable aid to their marketing efforts. It’s time to consider a commercial structure for your talent. “The man who works for nothing will always be busy”. Take some advice from your local small business centre. You need a mentor who can guide you and get you making money. IMO you’re very close.
Don’t carry on giving pictures away; there’s no need.
All the best with the job interviews and potentially making cash from pictures.

Thank you indeed   I never knew you could make your own luck but if that’s possible I’ve more than likely created my own luck and some in my eyes

Like I have said regarding Allied Glass, I have created some more pictures but I will be asking for some money if they are using them for marketing purposes as I am a tight git who loves money and if someone is benefiting from my hard work that’s just not on so they will be paying next time round!!! As I am not a charity case and don’t do things for free twice   I gave the first lot of pictures out of kindness, I will be letting them know that times are hard and I am now looking for work etc

Only time will tell

Cheers

Jonnyboy, all I can say is :sunglasses: ! :grimacing:

Thank you indeed. Although I’ll try not to ruin this industry

like someone on this forum seems to think I’m doing :grimacing: :grimacing: :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers

Johnny

Like I said, I wish you all the best with your photography. But please get some advice on selling yourself and your products. There are small business centres in many towns that will be happy to help and they don’t charge. You have a potential silver mine (not quite as good as a goldmine!) sat in front of you. Just make sure you exploit it properly. Both you and the customer stand to gain from this if it’s done well. Get advice urgently Johnny.

All the best, Pete

Its good to hear things are looking up for you matey

Like has already been said get info and how you can make your self a nice little bit of cash on this.

I was a freelance web designer for around 1 1/2 years and I started off with 1 or 2 projects where I offered my self out to small companies for free.

It is a good way to get you out there and start off but you need to make sure you stamp it out as soon as you can and start setting prices as you’ll get no where.

Thank you for the advice.

I am going to be talking to head of photography today as he is the one to talk to as he does freelance photography as well so advice in helping me start out and what advice he could give regarding prices etc!!!

I personally love my work and considering I don’t have any ‘professional’ equipment my work is a very excellent standard and certainly makes everyone look twice :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Such work like these using a standard digital camera and editing a little bit on photoshop:

Hopefully I will be able to turn these into a little bit of a number

I’ll let you all know how it goes today and if anyone would like pictures of their truck to let me know :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Cheers
