hey guys
after passing my c+e end of last year (did both classes back 2 back) or as near as possible . i have spent most of jan,feb being rejected and feeling dejected . or is it the other way around
well i’ve donr all the usual . cv’s , covering letters , phone calls , even visited a few local hauliers .
everytime i have been hit with the same answer…no experience/2 years blah blah blah
so i started to look at all the advertisements (online) and made a note of the poster , be it employer or agency .
and i saw one agency in particular advertising for several of the vacancies.
i’m in north lincolnshire btw (scunthorpe) dont hold it against me
anyway…back to my post.
i noticed this one agency which was advertising several vacancies was also advertising for class 1 shunter drivers on my local steelworks , i had also been turned down for the same job(shunting) by another agency because i didnt have 2 years experience . it’s onsite shunting for god’s sake , they said “cant insure you”!
so i phoned this agency up and spoke to the girl , i asked her if she could spare a moment of her time and explained my position (basically no experience) her first response was most if not all agencies will quote the 2 years/no experience rule to you and wont touch you . she said i should try the smaller local firms for a better chance of a start .
but i told her i had previously done onsite shunting years ago (in a tugmaster at hygena) and she said wait , i will call the company about the shunting on steelworks , 20 mins later , yep no problem they are happy with that .
no proof required (although it was true ) and she said come in next day sign up with agency .
next day i signed up and she started talking about a host of opportunities for new drivers , tesco’s have recently changed there policy and will take on newly qualified drivers (7 hours assessment aside )
i am also on the shortlist for the next shunting gig on my steelworks , not the ideal job but precious experience nontheless .
but…yes there is more if you are still awake
the agency sent me to cemex at south ferriby today for an induction . it’s a local cement factory (same as rugby)
and i’m hopefully starting with regular (touch wood) weekend work on class 1 walking floor trailers . it’s that godawful
climafuel stuff . not bad pay and good experience
when the guy showed us the wagon with the walking floor trailer attached my first thought was…
jesus that’s one big ■■■ rig…who gave me a license to drive that on the road?
so i’m a mixture of excitement and trepidation with a bucket load of fear thrown in.
will let you guys know how it goes.
sorry if i rambled on a bit like
