A driver trapped in Spain- scammer - be warned

A couple members here have let me know they have been contacted via e-mail (not via TruckNet ) by someone claiming to be a driver- the story is the driver is in Spain, the cab has been robbed and everything taken and he needs a loan to get a new passport and get home.

This is a scam- unless you personaly know anyone e-mailing you - ignore it.

I do realise the majority of you will recognise this type of scam- but some folks here are not as wordly wise. so my advice is do not even reply. simply delete the mail- if you have a concerns that it may be genuine forward the e-mail to me (UKadmin@truck.net) so we can make enquiries.

NEVER SEND ANY MONEY OR BANK DETAILS TO SUCH MAILS

had something similiar not too long ago whereby a friend was supposedly stuck in Madrid with no money and a hotel bill to pay.
Knowing ■■■■ well that there was no way this person was in Spain it just got ignored

Well this flavour makes a change i must say. Ive normally won a lottery or some such BS in catmandoo or Ive suddenly become the ‘recipient’ of 750’000 USD etc etc. I never had one of these ‘im stuck, please help’ emails. So far!

Even if you know the person, make enquiries as the scam usually involves the person concerned in the e-mail having their account hacked and a group mailing is sent out to all the account contacts asking for help.
It happened to a freinds daughter who actually happened to be out of the country and left her e-mail account logged on at an internet cafe computer, luckily she was contacted by phone pretty much straightaway by concerned contacts and although her log-in details had been changed by the scammer, the internet provider was able to help the family get back into the account to retract the begging e-mail.

I received something similar a few months back, the daughter of a friend was stuck somewhere with no money etc. A genuine email address was used.

Contacted friend who confirmed daughter was in UK and had not been to that particular country.

Also received a couple emails from a friend of the wife earlier this year. This person had sadly died about two years ago. Again the emails were from her daughters email address.

As suggested, if in doubt, ask questions from reliable sources and trust nothing you receive until you have confirmed it’s authenticity.

Aye got the email rikki was actualy a member on here that it was supposed to have come from , so i opened it but no harm done, realised it was a scam soon as i read it & marked as such

Yep i received that one, wanted to tell him where to poke his passport but thought better of it and hit the delete button

I got one a few months ago offering me $10m if I could put my bank account forward to launder the proceeds of Saif Gadaffi (before he was picked up by the authorities!)

Jeremy Clarkson famously could not understand how only a bank account number (with no PIN, SSV, or Credit Card numbers involved) could then be used to loot someone’s account…

I think it’s fair to say that there are few enough drivers who’d ■■■■ on their mate if he was on fire, (strangers asking for money indeed!) in today’s industry, so I don’t think scammers will bother long in this neck of the woods!

Thanks for sharing this information, I had an accident when I was in Span last year.

Did you immediately e-mail all your mates, begging for money?

I’ve had a flurry of bent emails, purporting to be from Paypal. They look genuine, but they are not. They inform you of some problem with your account and ask you for details, which can then be used to rob you. Be warned- check Paypal’s list of spoof email identifiers. It is on their Freephone number and probably their website.

These are the worst sort of criminals- the ones that you cannot confront, fist to face.

I am a driver who has had his Passport nicked, it was British, I was parked outside the Owners Club one Saturday night in Estoril.
I phoned home straight away and got my wife to cancel my cards straight away (at 0200 hrs)
I also phoned the British Embassy in Lisbon and notified them of the theft. They assured me that I could get a temporary Passport from the Consul by attending at the Embassy at midday Sunday.
I went there and he wrote one out as I sat in front of him. It worked just fine annd I surrendered it to Immigration at Poole as I left the ship. I immediately applied for a replacement and it was back by return of post. We can knock the bureaucracy but they will really perform when we need them.
The interesting twist was that I also had my cards and wallet stolen including an Amex Card. At the end of the month my Amex Bill arrived including $8.000.00 of charges in Colombia, South America. After the meds resuscitated me, I read more thoroughly and saw it was someone elses bill! I phoned Amex and frankly, they couldn’t care a toss. And Amex boasts how good it is?

Hello,
Hope you get this on time, I’m sorry for this odd request because it might get to you too urgent. I am presently on a short trip to Madrid, Spain. Unfortunately, i was robbed in the hotel i booked, all my valuables which includes cash, cell phones was stolen during the attack but luckily i still have my passport with me. I have been to the Embassy and the Police here but they are not taking the matter seriously. Please i really need your financial assistance now because things are really getting tough on me here. Kindly lend me £1,850 GBP or the amount you can afford now as soon as possible so i can sort out things and leave here, i assure you i’ll refund your money including the transfer charges immediately i get back. Please let me know if you will be able to help me as soon as possible so i can tell you how to send the money.

I will really appreciate your prompt response.

Best regards

That is what was sent to me today so I placed it in Junk file, it was from a person I used to Email, … I wanted to Email back telling them to get the Euro coach for £30 quid! … it is a scam beware

Remember that these can appear to come from an e-mail addy that you know. A couple of years ago all the people on my address list got a strange message that they assumed came from me.
