Icee:
BTW. Got me a cheap dash cam lately. Amazing quality and it’s not even at the highest settings, just need to work on a better mounting point. Anyway, edited together a short video Going south from Fauske a beautiful winter day this week.
Hope it’s ok to post it. youtube.com/watch?v=2EvDEv53UXo
good video, what’s the manufacturer? I’m planning on buying one but not at €300 or what they’re asking for finevue etc. haven’t been north of sogndal on the 5 yet

This one , had a sale on them a couple of weeks ago. Don’t get anything with gps. Anything witch records speed can be used against you in an accident claiming you drove to fast
Icee I was checking it out and looking into aliexpress as well to see if its maybe cheaper there but then I got a prestigio roadrunner 560 for my birthday/christmas from my father looking forward to using it in the north.

thanks bonnie lass, and everyone else as well

I do wonder about that G sensor. If it can be turned against you, otherwise that looks like a nice piece of kit
doesn’t bother me too much, according to the telematics system on the Scania I average two “hard” decelerations for every 1000km and as a quite defensive driver I think that its overreacting a bit. but I know what you’re saying about going back to a volvo after a scania with the weights and all, will be difficult. we’ll see next year, whether I’ll be in a swedish lorry or a DAF, I could drive a KamAZ if the price was right

Not the regular driving I worry about but when a accident might happen. The investigators will take the camera if they see it. If they find something that doesn’t look right it might be used against you even if it in no way was your fault.
Can honestly say I wouldn’t, I’m driving abroad or Norway because I still think it’s fun in the winter. If I like it for 3 more months or 30 years that I don’t know.
But if I had to drive crap I could for ex continue as a electrician (fixed Mitsu digger with burnt electrics a couple of weeks ago and it was actually quite fun doing it again, needed a new harness), not worth being away in crap.
thanks for the pics Dan, I drove the fourth one one the left in the first pic
yeah it’s definitely fun in Norway in the winter but that’s where the comparison with the kamaz comes in - the feeling of achievement after you’ve gone through some horrific storm with trucks in ditches etc (although I think I really haven’t seen the worst the winter has to offer) or managing another trip far away in a piece of crap truck as I used to drive older trucks to the balkans, ukraine, turkey and even georgia and when it broke down, you first of all tried to fix it and if all else failed, bowed your head in shame and called for a tow . but I can still remember how proud I was after changing the turbo on an ex-Thomsen 124-400 at a gas station in Latvia with basically no tools and that was only a few weeks after getting my C+E

No turbo change yet Only the bolts that shake loose, always got some spare with me now. Worst thing probably being some “air brake chamber” (don’t if that’s the English translation(jarrukello)). A pulley broke and snapped both fan belts close to Gardemoen, action service being everything else than cheap over there I used the heater. That little electric water pump was enough to cool the engine so I continued all the way to Kongsvinger. Thank you Scania for not having auto shut of on the heater when engines running

this got me thinking, couldn’t they just check the tacho for the speed you were going at? anyways, procrastinating here in Alvdal for 24h so on my way here saw a truck that looked familiar, I don’t think it was my friend chris54 as the driver wasn’t flipping me off while screaming obscenities, red face and all
the pic was from finnish lappland last wednesday while heading south. last monday while heading north it was -40c there.

Nope, it’s been taken to court. The tacho is not a calibrated speed recorder and can not be used against you. The same way you can not be failed because of speeding by reading the tacho, say you been driving 90 all the time and the speed limit is 80. You have to be caught with a calibrated instrument, ex radar or a speed camera. The Swedish TG (vosa…) in Luleå loves to give you a ticket for this but it’s done on wrong grounds and will not hold up in court.
But since the dash cam uses GPS it can be used as speed recorder. A friend is a driving school teacher there have been some long discussions about this stuff, also got a police teacher and some other people involved.
Still at home, of to the North tomorrow morning.
Last winter in Karasjok, peaked at -42
Forgot to grease the fifth wheel so it wouldn’t steer at all even with a light load and trying to do it when I took the night proved to be impossible, had a roped attached to the lever and ■■■■■■■ to a tree in the nearby and tried to drive to get the leaver pulled but still wouldn’t move, rope snatched. Well no problem by lunch next day the temperature had climbed to zero, started raining and the leaver moved with just one hand…
I don’t think the real story is that much different - I’ve seen many companies think hey let’s buy a cheap 3-axle truck, a wreck of a trailer and hire a cheap driver (seen many who only speak russian) and lets make lots of money in scandinavia
if I’m ever in doubt, I ask the office and get a google maps route to the iPad straight away. no doubt they wouldn’t let me stay stranded for two days even if I was stupid enough to go and try my luck like that…
Having just read the article i still amazes me how many drivers still work so blindly from a satnav. Many of them are older, experienced guys who come from the age of maps so i really cannot comprehend how they get into some of these situations. These are guys who have previously had to fumble their way round countries, sometimes only with an old school atlas.
I don’t think Ill ask about that incident from the office right now, salt on the wound and all that, with 42 trucks, some are bound to do stupid things once in a while
Wow he is pretty stuck eh. Must hard for him when his english is no good. Looks like an expensiv job to get him out of there…
Hope you will have a good weekend!
I don’t either trust the route the Gps takes. Doesn’t matter how you got it set up. SVV map for heavy veichels in Norway, Google maps or phone a friend (best one) but nope definitely not the Gps but it’s perfect to calculate the arrival time and to mark how far away the next turn is. Also use it in heavy snow storm when it’s seriously hard to even see the plow sticks 2m in front of you then it’s perfect to see how the road turns
What I can’t understand is how he hasn’t stopped earlier. According to the locals he gone a far bit up the road and even passed a bridge.
Meet one of your Volvos on a tow truck heading towards Arvidsjaur also this week that looked like it had taken a rest on the side. Bad luck week I guess? But the best one was Girteka taking a rest in Mo I Rana, looked quite funny, and on a straight road
