What really ■■■■■■ me off is the idea that having these tankers built in Italy is somehow much more acceptable than having them built in Korea. Hello■■?
What that article doesn’t tell you is that (based on my own experience with Italian machinery) the extra money will be spent on British engineers and technicians working for five years to put right the ■■■■ ups made by the Italians. The ships will then break down every time they leave port, but on the positive side they will look beautiful.
Put it this way. Even if we could build them in the UK (which I doubt) it would cost a fortune, take twice as long, have to be modified because stuff doesn’t for or simply becomes obsolete before its installed, and go over budget by a zillion per cent. Send the job to the Koreans, it’ll not only be delivered in budget and on time but it will work, it’ll continue to work for many years and will be a better ship for our sailors to use.
You might not like this; but it’s no use saving “British jobs” at the expense of crap kit.
well lets be honest…if the second world war was ran by the folks who goven us over the past few years…we would of lost ,cos we cant get parts for the messasmidhts,we bought instead of spitfires
We just have to accept that the lunatics are in full control of the asylum. If we factor in the cost of keeping the workforce idle then out tender for this work would have been competitive.

This lot don’t produce crap kit? But they’re not the MOD which is where the problems really lie, in the hands of politicians who have never had a proper job in their lives! British workers have proved time and time again they can compete with the best. British management and Government is a different story.
Sorry but beg to differ, as a serving ,member of the forces I’m glad that the contract gone out with the uk. We will now get the ships on time on budget and not be taken for of a ride by BAE with delays and add on costs with the company blackmailing us about British jobs. At the end of the day we just want kit that works.
The standard of the work on ships produced by the korean and chinese shipyards is overall crap, inferior steel to start with. You can sit and watch them rust away. No names or packdrill but a shipping company I have worked for has had korean built ships but they say never again.
We all want you to have the best kit to do your job. This contract can be fulfilled here quite easily. They’re only tankers, nothing too complicated about that. They would appear to be more expensive if built here but when you factor in the cost of lost jobs etc then the difference is not so great with the added bonus of helping to preserve a British skills pool that if totally lost would be very difficult if not impossible to revive in the future. Out of curiousity what branch of the services are you in?
The wages the British shipbuilders got if they had been given the chance of building them would have been taxed so that about 20% then there’s the tax and vat on goods purchased with the remainder of their wage and as has been said the money saved by not having to pay unemployment benefits.
Same fiasco as when the train order went to Germany and then the factory in the UK went pop (I think)
Peter Luff … defence minister… Peter Duff more like, bloody idiots!
i,m with 44tonne ton on this, we do have the folk with skills to do the job, hell of alot of skilled folk out there who are doing run of the mill things cos thats all there is, think some of the prob comes from not being able to make anything under one roof, it either gets transported about or built in sections at different works, then when it comes together?
Where is the great British Technology gone, who powered once the World?
Sold out,and all the technician, left over, seating around or work in china,India or another such Country.
just think of the many People who would work on it.Not just the Technician, but also the Supplyer and Transport/Logistic Industry

I’d tend to generally agree with that. We do have some first-rate engineering firms still, and R-R is probably the best; but Stevenmac 08 raises a good point. Our servicemen have little confidence in the MOD, and that’s been the case for more years than I care to count. Successive governments of every political colour have tried to make it work, and failed; it’s effectively a law unto itself.
Classic examples of this are the SA-80 rifle and the Bowman communications system; the former was poorly developed and only became a useable piece of kit after a thorough re-design and the loss of a fair few lives, the latter is still, after millions of pounds of wasted public money, not fit for purpose.
Check out also what our soldiers wear in combat; very little of it is British in origin, for the simple reason that the home-grown kit is inferior. If we can’t get the basics like boots and uniform right, what chance have we of succeeding with ships?

The train order wasn’t between a British and a German company, it was between two German companies

Bombardier Welcomes HRH The Prince of Wales to its Derby, UK Site
February 24, 2012 – Berlin
Transportation
Employees of Bombardier’s manufacturing site in Derby today welcomed His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, as part of a tour of the region to show his support for British manufacturing. Bombardier’s Derby site is the UK’s only rolling stock manufacturing facility and one of the UK’s leading centres of engineering excellence.
The Prince spent more than an hour at the site, where he met key members of staff, including engineers and project and manufacturing team members, as well as local officials. He was hosted by Sir Neville Simms, Non-Executive Chairman of Bombardier Transportation UK, and given a tour of the site by Dr Francis Paonessa, President of UK Rolling Stock, to view the full scope of the manufacturing process, including the design, construction and test areas. In addition to meeting engineers, The Prince was introduced to young apprentices who are part of the Bombardier Apprentice Scheme.

I am not a serving member of the forces but I think the same, wherever the money goes but BAe.

It’s up to customer what he asks for, pays for and accepts on delivery, what supervision they have over their new build. And then, how they maintain their kit.
Look at Dover-Dunkerque fleet, all Koreans, 7/8 yrs old now? Still like new.
I have doubts about the quality of both korean or Italian kit having had plenty of experience of both. However, it’s time that certain sectors of the UK workforce got off their high-horse and realised that they are not worth the money they have managed to convince themselves they are.
Their continuous belief that they are a special case deserving a bonus for actually doing something once they have attended work is what has caused the decline and will be the demise of their industry.

You’re talking about Fred and his cronies, right?
I’m actually RLC Driver trade that why I’m on the site, waiting redundancy. Yes Britain does have a skilled and techie workforce but Britain defence industry has milk the MOD for decades. Government order kit from them not for best value and on time but for votes! The aircraft carries are the best example being build in two parts one in Glasgow ( labour heart land at the time) and Devon port. As a poster said SA80 rifle best example took 20 year and 3 major operations to get a good rifle but we could have saved a lot of money buying off the Americans or Canadians.
