I would just like to say thanks to the Langdons driver Adam who was at Bakkavor Sutton Bridge today for helping me back in on that tight blind side reverse, I wouldn’t have done it without you! Also thanks for the hand to the Turners (Spalding) driver who was patient and helpful with me today.
A general note, as it’s my first week on Class 1, I have had a lot of advice, tips, patience and help from many drivers this week. Only the odd one too impatient to wait and putting pressure on me, but I know what it’s like when you are chasing your tail all day. A lot have said we have all had a first day/week and I’m pretty proud of the “brotherhood” I have come across this week in the Lincs area.
Thanks again.

Good to see that we stick together occasionally and help new drivers…and well done for having the balls to ask for help as your boss would be peeved if it came back dented or broke.

Thats not a nice reverse when you are nervous. Was it to the bay on the left as you come in or the sloping bays on the right? Either way its a crap design. I dont know how you did it but if its the dock undercover on the left I find the easiest way is to swing in and then go down the slope. Try to end up trailer and cab straight but at angle to the bay. That way you can see the bay as you reverse. Stick your lock on and you should just about miss those stupid bollards. be careful though seen a few hit the bollards with the step or catch the step in the kerby slopey bit.
Normally you have to wait there so long that any form of entertainment is welcome - I was there 3 hours yesterday.

Yeah it was the first area on the left under the canopy I should have gone down the bays to the right but didn’t lol. It didn’t help that they had filled the tip area with pallets and stock. I was there nearly 3 hours too.
Im definitely not too proud to ask for help I made the mistake of hoping it will be ok my first day class 2, once bitten…
No prizes for first back with a bent wagon…
We all had to start somewhere, good to hear that not everyone has forgotten that.I remember when I first got my class one,so many drivers would just sit and watch me struggle even after I explained i was a newbie and asked them for a spot.Too many drivers forget what it’s like when you’re starting out
Good to hear that you got the help needed from other drivers but in my opinion a banksman should be provided by the company (not the haulier) for all blind side reverses where there is a possibility of damage.
I have been driving artics for more than 40 years and learnt with flat trailers and cabs with rear windows when blindside reverses weren’t such a problem, blind side reverses are not easy for anyone.
A few years ago soon after my son had started driving he damaged a drum of ink stored inthe open when attempting a blind side reverse into a yard without assistance. The company involved sent me an invoice for several thousand pounds, when I pointed out the H&S implications and the fact that the ink was washed down a drain I never heard anymore.
