£846.00 for a trailer tyre!

I would wear a boiler suit to change tyres, keeping my clothes clean.

Now, why didn’t I think of that? :unamused:

Harry, where are these Kepstowe diaries you promised us when you “retired” No pun intended by the title

I think I’ve probably posted most of my pics here and there on TN over the years already, I’m sure there is already a thread about Kepstowe on the old time forum with a fair few on there.

for those who don’t know how to change a tyre :stuck_out_tongue:

maybe I’ll get a job where the truck has spares one day :stuck_out_tongue:

Safety Sandals?

Best way I find is 2 tyre bars and your forehead to line the wheel up with the studs, especially on twins when you are trying to get the valves opposite

Two years ago I got a blow out just before the Mitterand bridge on the 630 round Bordeaux. It was 5:30 in the morning and the bill came to just short of 1500 euros - extra before 6;30 am, extra for le weekend, and 70 euros for casing disposal. The boss was not a happy bunny.

Incidentally for those of you who dont do Europe - it is illegal to change your own wheel on the side of ANY road in France.

■■■■■■■■ to them. We do it anyway if we can get away with it. Im loathed to pay the exorbiant prices the French charge for something I can do myself. I take the chance, and have done several times and got away with it.

How much would the fine be, less than £846 I bet.

I can tell you haven’t been to France for a while now Malc, the days of 90FF at worse with a chance that "Voulez vous un cafe, Monsieur? would hit the spot are long gone!

And the four journey permits that British International would always give me one with five stamps on it,not allowed, and the bung or coffee money to the Doaunes in Cherbourg, one agent who was working in the 90`s is still working there,i had to do a double take, and said to him that i recognised him,it was him allright, looking a bit sheepish.

I know about the rapid inflation Harry. (or should that be rapid deflation :stuck_out_tongue: ) But it is still a risk I would take, drag it off the motorway and chuck any telltale bits of rubber in the verge if it was safe, then spend 30 minutes in a layby hoping someone else would have a nice brew ready for me when I had finished

zzzzz, oh, hello folks, that was a nice dream I was having :stuck_out_tongue:

A few month ago at Avranches i stopped to help another Scottish fish man change a punture ,halfway thru the job the plod turned up, and sat behind us with there blues flashing, until the orange van arrived and took over from the plod until we had it changed it, we had the triangle out and high vis vests on,so it must depend on the plod involved ,i got the impression from them that the sooner we got it done the better.
It was just where the Autoroute finishes at the bottom of the hill which is narrow.

Good Idea

I would have willingly paid £846 and more for someone else to change the tyre that went on me in Calais, it was on one of Richard Longs lowloader trailers when I had a wide load on. To say it was a right pain in the proverbial is an understatement.

All my trailers have twin spare wheel carriers & I gladly pay my drivers to change tyres. £1000 is average price for new trye in France… I was a boy scout… Be Prepared !!!

Couldnt agree more, you obviously employ drivers with a bit of nous, because most “drivers” nowadays would park up if they had a marker light out !!

For those of you, and I include myself in this, who have to change your own wheels and who dont have an airgun etc consider investing in a Torque Multiplier available from this company: Ive seen one being used at the side of the road and it was absolutely awesome.

I would add for those who would point out that I paid for a tyre change in Bordeaux that I had no choice, the CRS who patrol the N630 were upon me before I managed to get the triangles out!

The CRS, the pride of France’s police . . .

I’ll watch how I drive next time I go over to our depot at Begles!

Id rather deal with the CRS than Gendarmes to be honest - the two who pulled up behind me were very polite and helpful, even telling me not to bother with the triangle (in my hand, with flourescent storm jacket on too) as they had called the patrouille and would stay behind me until they arrived.
