Torkey:
Anyone that defends working for £7 per hour as a Class 1 driver is a disgrace to the industry.
…and a disgrace to themselves.
please explain why?
apart from fitting in with your ideals,
I,m raising a family, which i spend quality time with, I have apart from a mortgage and a credit card no debt. we have 1 main car as said a nice decent discovery, paid for, we have 2 -3 family holidays a year.
Apart from a mortgage I have no debt. I have a nice decent car paid for, the wife has a sports car

Why as a professional driver would you accept £7 per hour, good you got £9, is that what you think your worth? It’s quite shocking that drivers think that’s what there worth, Aldi shelf stackers earn more, to be fair your the reason that some company’s pay garbage, cos people like YOU accept it
Can’t believe this thread is still going, look at the title of it…£7.00 per hour, grow some balls those who think or get this disgusting amount is reasonable

Oh dear, at one time British people would be embarassed to boast of their material worth, they played their wins, achievements and material gains down.
Wish i hadn’t clicked on to to read the above few posts, the latest updates of a Germy Kylesque reality ■■■■■■■ contest.
Quite. Too much ‘oh, look at me everybody!’
As for £7 per hour, you don’t have to drive too far on any of the major dual carriageways or motorways to see plenty of lorry ‘drivers’ to whom that would represent a substantial over-valuation of their awful skills, awareness and consideration for others.
Called to my Mum yesterday. She is still very active for her age (88 years). I try to get round once or twice a week to see that she is ok or that she needs anything doing. So we are sat down having a cup of tea and a slice of cake (like you do with your Mum) and she tells me that some of her friends have made enquires about the help of a house cleaner. Well we live in North Lincolnshire, not a money loaded area. Mum then said they all want £10.00 per hour.
Just thought I would throw that one on the shag pile !
why dont we all join one union and strike until every driver gets £20 per hour! or petition the government to set wages for hgv driver like they do in some eurpoean countries.
oh thats right drivers couldnt stick together if their lives depended on it, so there will always be firms paying low wages and always be drivers who will jump at the chance .
I recently took a pay cut when I moved jobs but now my wages are based on 10 hr days ( if I do more then I do get a little extra ) but I am now a mile from home so could give up my car if wanted so in some ways I am better off as las job was based on 13 hr days & 30 mile away
In the past I have changed jobs I had a decent paying 1 but the down side I was working all weekend which didnt give me a good work life balance
As I am not that materialistic ( as long as have enough to pay my bills with some left over then yep happy )

Pretty much this really. ^^^ I know it’s not the 70’s anymore, but seriously lads, wages are in our hands. If we all stuck together,a minimum £10hr for HGV drivers would be achieveable in 1 week. The UK would stop working if we stopped driving, and ALL stuck together.Quite simple really. But it’ll never happen with the “i’m ok so it don’t bother me” mentality.

Or I already get that
But lets think about it a bit more the rates for the job have not changed or some even gone down since the 70’s/80’s
We could all become OD then charge the rate we want
its a shame as the job is worth £10 as a minimum however like the original op states people look for different things other than £££, which is a shame because if all drivers for each class got a set ‘minimum’ then you could pick jobs on a great deal more than just location or hours or how shiny the truck is!
it would also get rid of the cowboys who undercut to the limit and reduce the wages in the first place!
Been offered a job with the local council on bins, £7.50/£10.50 OT for the first 12 weeks, then its £9/12 OT after that. Not sure if I want to take. Its easy work and its job and knock though.

The crew you get makes or breaks that job. Good crew = easiest job and the best barrel of laughs you’ll ever have. Bad crew = well, good luck with that one. When I did it when I was a nipper I had a great crew and it was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had in terms of enjoyment.

I’m hoping to start next week. Is the money ok for stuff like that? The last few jobs I was doing Class 2 wise were £9/£10 an hour with more for weekend work.
Some of the comments on this thread are really baffling. And drivers should stick together to drive a better deal for everyone. Not be the one that jumps on a job for peanuts.
If you look at this like any business its a matter of supply and demand. So many people on here have said that the need for drivers everywhere is at one of the best levels for years. You could imagine if 500 drivers were desperate for 100 jobs that it would be the ones prepared to do it for the least money that would get the job.
But if you flip that to 100 drivers choosing between 500 jobs, it should be the 100 best paid jobs that are filled. And that should be driving companies to offer better rates.
Minimum wage should be for unskilled general work. HGV driving is a skilled job. Why would people spend £2000-£2500 getting qualifications and licence to earn the same rate as an unskilled worker?

On the bins it is very rare to get O/T, so you will be working for 8x£7.50 (£60) or 8x£9.00 (£72) a day, less deductions of course.
When I tried it, it was a 5-7 hour job with a 5AM start, not for me and its never going to make you rich.

Generally speaking, working direct for the local authority pays above average for the class of vehicle in comparison to the private sector. If you want set hours every week with guaranteed £x in the bank and can cope with local housing estate roads + badly parked cars don’t phase you then you could do a hell of a lot worse, let’s put it that way. Are you sure it’s direct with the council and not via an agency? Usually it’s hard to get in direct and these jobs are usually agency. Council interviews tend to be quite lengthy and they ask more questions on bull[zb] such as your views on disabled people and equal opportunities rather than the actual job.
