I was offered a job recently for the princely sum of £6.91 an hour (Class 1 fridge work, LARGE company) and was told I’d have to pay for another medical before starting work for them!!
As a recently qualified driver, I only had a medical last August to get my license anyway. I don’t think I look unhealthy, maybe a few pounds heavier than I should be but am in pretty good health.
Has anyone else heard of this?? Obviously if they pay me those colossal wages, funding another medical wouldn’t be a problem
I politely declined the offer and have work now but is this right and fair? I don’t think so but being new I was wondering if this is common practice?
I’m not aware of it being common practice, as for fair that’s up to the applicant to decide. £6.91 isn’t good but a lot of new drivers appear to be really struggling to get anything so it may suit somebody.
Yeah, fair point mrpj but that is a ridiculous wage for anyone driving a loaded artic, I do feel for the younger drivers trying to get a break into the industry bless 'em.
The particular company here do have a classroom on the premises to teach “new drivers” enough English to get them through their working day though which is nice
Shame really…
FW are on more than that. Father in law drives for them out of the Heywood depot. He’s on a good number (tramping) and says its one of the best driving jobs he’s had. Maybe different depots have different rates. I know the local runs pay less.
brilliant! would love to see the rest of that video. at first i thought the FW wagon was rolling forward after the fella in the hi-viz who walks across the yard had left the handbrake off, but this is even funnier
That’s a shocking rate of pay. The problem is that if people are desperate for the work they’ll do it. I used to be on £6.93 for class 2 but I needed to get the experience so took it.
