Met a driver this week. We were talking and he showed me his wage slip. £6.00 per hour for 50 hours per week. No more money after that even though he was doing 60 hours a week and working weekends! This was for driving a 44 ton artic. I know sprinter drivers on more money than that!

Where was he from, Wales or Cornwall ?
Makes no difference where he’s from.
If people are prepared to work in this industry driving 44 tonnes of freight for that money, then gaffers will continue to exploit them.
Ken.

Maybe that’s the only job he could get. Would you rather he refuse it and be dole scum?
I prefer for someone not to get rich at my expense.
Ken.
That’s less than what a Stobart driver can lose in fuel bonus in a week with people pulling out instead of staying out the way until they are past.

Yeah your right Ken.

So you must be one of the people of this country who would work in this industry for £6 an hour.
So who’s the prat there then?
And just for the record, I too have never been out of work in the 30 years since I left school, and not had to work for less than I’m worth.
Ken.

Truck drivers are being laid off left right and centre at the mo, it doesn’t mean that after 20 years they have decided to become “dole scum”.
Still, like they say, the worst type of snob is a working-class snob
He was not from Wales or Cornwall, he was from essex.
i wouldnt get out of bed for £6 an hour
at the moment im fixing amusement machines and im on £8.50 per hour and i wont go back to driving untill the money is better
Problem for drivers is…if I dont take that £6 p/h job what do I do? We are so used to having the “you arent worth it” drilled into us no wonder the bloke took it. He probably didnt realise that he could earn more doing a job with less responsibility? I drew the line at £7.50 for a rigid earlier in the year but it paid with long hours, and as long as folk are desperate as this lad was or polish will do it we have to keep an eye out for the firms who only want English

You must be one of the very few lucky ones in 1980 then. For most of us it was a case of dole or take whatever you can get at whatever rate you can get.As you seem to have got off lightly the first time you’ll be like many of the new lot in getting a shock in the hard times which are coming.
I met an old hand earning £6.50ph a few months ago.
He’s been building his pension pot for 30yrs but his wages had been ‘frozen’ by the outfit that took over 10yrs or so back. At close to retirement age he’d been advised by a union rep & financial advisors to sit tight & keep his nose clean.
I can’t remember the full & very complicated details but he seemed happy enuff that he wasn’t being BS’d into working at slave rates, he said he’d need to earn £28ph till he retired to cover what he’d be walking away from in lost pension.

I went for a job once and when i asked what the wages were, the bloke said he’d pay me what I was worth, I told him to poke it, no way would I work for that

Spot on as usual Harry Monk’
I’ve got to go now, to earn some more ‘Cornish wages’

Nice one
Depends on your circumstances. Tuckwells don’t pay much but you cant get an easier job than their tipper drivers have. If they’re running stock to their Radley depot from Ducklington they’ll only do about 4 loads a day.
