A 57 Köln - Neuss closed

Arsonists set fire to plastic pipes under an Autobahn bridge on the A57 on early Tuesday morning causing a mass pile up due to thick black smoke covering the carriageway.

1 person died and 13 were injured.

Due to damage to the bridge, the vehicles involved couldn’t be removed with tow trucks, but had to be individually pulled off the bridge with a steel cable.

Engineers will assess the damage to the bridge, which due to the damage suffered, may have to be demolished and rebuilt.

The autobahn is to remain closed between Kreuz Köln Nord and Kreuz Neuss Süd in both directions until further notice.

Not nice seeing a DHL subby involved in that . Very nasty

[ZB] me, they only lifted the roadworks on that bit last year.

Sorry to see that someone died and there were injuries :frowning:
I hope those injured recover fully and quickly.

Bit of an update:

The bridge is so badly damaged that it will have to be demolished and rebuilt.
The autobahn will remain closed until after Easter, by which time they reckon a temporary bridge should be in place.

The new bridge will take about 2 years to build and cost around 5 million Euros.

The autobahn remains closed between Dormagen and Kreuz Neuss Süd in both directions. A diversion is in place using the B9 which runs parallel to the autobahn, but… just don’t!

As this is a very busy route, all the alternative routes in the area such as the A3 and A59 will be stuffed. Avoid the whole area, particularly during rush hour, for the foreseeable future.

I hope this information is of use to the esteemed chauffeurs of Millar International on their regular Monday morning migration to All Points South
