so despite my telling them the fuel burned without taking into account my wages would be way over what they received for the job they insisted that I did it.
Sorry for sounding arsey… But what the [zb] has the rates got to do with you? Your company accepted a job, and you get paid whatever rate you work for.
For all you know, the company could have been paid a decent rate for the last load so they could have took on the other job for a bit of money… Better than running in empty.
Probly not actually which is his point, Deeside to Milton Keynes via Bracknell is 289 miles which is a pound & 3p per mile, the motor on light (I know but wouldn’t say just in case) would use say 60p per mile at 9 mpg (conservative), £175 on squirt, he’s earned say 175 quid, that’s £350 cost to do a £300 job not to mention the wear & tear on the wagon, plus wagon cost of say between £50 & £100 per day not to mention tyres & other costs.
Empty to MK from D 165 miles, 10mpg, 80 quid squirt, hit the primary rate load running with hard charger at the wheel
& you gotta wait 60 days for that £300.
Maybe they backload to MK directly most of the time which might make it worth doing, maybe it was a favour to get other better paying work but I doubt it.
Most haulage is a total mugs game, so many firms losing money hand over fist, granted some are hitting it right but not many.
It’s taken me many years to realise the likes of DHL, Wincanton, Eddie & so on are leaches, race to the bottom merchants destroying the haulage industry, subbing for them unless it’s a niche market is a fools errand.
Give me mucky work any day that hasn’t been cut to the bone by the big parasites.
You can’t take pride & do a good job on peanuts.
