£300 back load

Picked up a back load from DHL Deeside yesterday, I was instructed to be there at 13.00, when I got there, I was told that it wouldn’t be ready until 18.00 & was finally loaded by 19.30. So I left the trailer in their yard & kipped outside the gate.
Delivery was for Waitrose, Bracknell at 11.30, (but that suddenly became 12.30) I got to Bracknell at 11.12 & tried to get it off ! No chance ! They finally started to take it off at 12.50 & finished around 13.20.
It’s now 14.15 & I’m still waiting for the Chumps to check it off (enduring a shift change in the process) & they are saying that there’s too many on one pallet & they might have to return some !

All this B/S for £300 !

No wonder this industry is struggling !
What would an owner driver do ?
If you had 2 of these a week you’d either run out of Tears or Jump off the highest bridge you could find !

Earlier this year I tipped in Dumfries and our nerve centre instucted me to load trays at Belshill for Nuneaton! Now I knew that this load paid the grand sum of £150 so despite my telling them the fuel burned without taking into account my wages would be way over what they received for the job they insisted that I did it.

The worst part was with holds ups both whilst loading and whilst tipping I didn’t have time to pick up the “urgent” load that I’d been pencilled in for.

Later that week I got pulled into the office for allowing my vehicle to tick over for more than two minutes! My reply wouldn’t get past the auto censor! :imp:

I know a certain supermarket chain are handing out backloads from stoke to the south west for 150 quid. Cheaper to run the truck empty back to base and do a couple of local loads

Planners don’t care cos one of their major KPI’s is empty running - so as long as your loaded they are happy.

Higher up the food chain - some manager has the “rate/profit” as his KPI so at that point ■■■■ will begin to fly when he fails a target. Lo and behold 3 months later it will somehow be all the drivers fault somehow.

Joys of working for a large firm and why I work for a small family firm who actually (well sometimes) listen when you point things like the fact you have experienced how long the loading will take and that they haven’t, so take your experience into account.

Right !
Left Bracknell at 16.10 & the Cheeky Chumps have refused half a pallet, so I had to phone around getting the office to authorise the collection, (even more time wasted)
Total time on the job (from 13.00 yesterday = 27 hours minus 9 hours rest, so 18 hours for a collection from Deeside to Bracknell for £300 (+ 2 hours back to MK) & just to add insult to injury I’m stuck on the 25 in the Poxy traffic. Happy Days !
Never mind, there’s always tomorrow.

Sorry for sounding arsey… But what the ■■■■ has the rates got to do with you? Your company accepted a job, and you get paid whatever rate you work for.

For all you know, the company could have been paid a decent rate for the last load so they could have took on the other job for a bit of money… Better than running in empty.

Your firm should have demurrage agreed up front, charging £35 per hour after 2 hours, so should be £157.50 for Deeside loading delay and Bracknell from 13:30 or 14:30 depending which booking in time was advised in writing when you were given the job by down hill logistics.

Totally agree, but it’s Barron Wood & I’m not sure what the agreement is, I know management chase up the delays, thinking that they can hurry these places up (we’re on the front line & know that doesn’t help most of the time)

As trubster says “the rates are nothing to do with us” but at the end of the day, I want to know that I’m making money or not, because If we have too many days like this, there won’t be any lorries for me to drive.

That will be £500 payment in advance by credit transfer to put the one pallet back on our lorry, take it or leave it. If you want it delivered anywhere other than our yard, that will be at our standard rate for one pallet deliveries. Our storage rates are £x per package per 24 hrs for ambient product with a premium for chilled or frozen. If you wish to collect it yourselves, then please note that we run a booking in system with a 10 minutes early 30 minutes late window… sir.

You don’t sound arsey mate, it’s a valid point that you raise, one which I’ll try to answer; every Co that I have ever worked for I have striven to maximise their profits. Not that I want to be seen as a blue eyed boy, in fact my reasons are far more mercenary, it’s my belief that if a Co is making good profits they are far more likely to remain in business and also far more inclined to share that profit via pay rises.

Granted, my little bit alone will probably not affect the balance sheets of the multi national I work for, but it’s my honestly held belief that if every cog in the machine operates the way I do then we WILL make a difference.

Perhaps I am deluding myself but I think it’s all part of being professional.

Also, they did get a good rate for my previous job, but they’d have got an exceptional rate for the one I missed due to the crap load and they had to sub it to another haulier.

Ha ha, that’s nearly what I asked for, I told them that it would be £600, because of the day I’d had with it.
Don’t suppose we’ll get it though.

Probly not actually which is his point, Deeside to Milton Keynes via Bracknell is 289 miles which is a pound & 3p per mile, the motor on light (I know but wouldn’t say just in case) would use say 60p per mile at 9 mpg (conservative), £175 on squirt, he’s earned say 175 quid, that’s £350 cost to do a £300 job not to mention the wear & tear on the wagon, plus wagon cost of say between £50 & £100 per day not to mention tyres & other costs.

Empty to MK from D 165 miles, 10mpg, 80 quid squirt, hit the primary rate load running with hard charger at the wheel

& you gotta wait 60 days for that £300.

Maybe they backload to MK directly most of the time which might make it worth doing, maybe it was a favour to get other better paying work but I doubt it.

Most haulage is a total mugs game, so many firms losing money hand over fist, granted some are hitting it right but not many.

It’s taken me many years to realise the likes of DHL, Wincanton, Eddie & so on are leaches, race to the bottom merchants destroying the haulage industry, subbing for them unless it’s a niche market is a fools errand.

Give me mucky work any day that hasn’t been cut to the bone by the big parasites.

You can’t take pride & do a good job on peanuts.

Ha, no and they used to want you to run their empty pallets back as well.

If I had 25 of me, then I too would be a millionaire  , obviously they’d need to buy a grands worth of lottery tickets every week, but I’m sure it’d work out eventually.

Company I occasionally drive for haul a trailer over the Pennines every night to service a contract in Manchester with 3 drops of up to 3 pallets each (usually just 1 or 2 pallets for each drop) then have the driver haul ■■■ all the way from Stockport area up to Preston to load 27 tonne for Wakefield for the grand sum of £150, and the Preston load is never ready meaning that there’s a minimum of 2-3 hours driver overtime rate to come out of that.

It’s been pointed out to them many times that the Preston job isn’t making them any money at all and they’d be better binning it off and servicing the Manchester contract with the 7.5 tonner and a 7.5t driver rate. But they know best…

Drop your office phone numbers off will you lads.
Might have some wotrk coming up for you.
I am willing to go to 5 magic beans (but no more mind)
