Had to make a call to the emergency services yesterday morning, I was northbound on the M6 between J14 and J15 at about 04.30, there had been an accident, it appeared by the skid marks and the debris that a car had hit the central barrier, spun a couple of time and then hit the barrier again, as I arrived on the scene I could see people in hi viz pushing the car to move it out of the carriageway, I thought it was the police or highways agency but it was a couple of fellow drivers helping out, we then moved off and I expected to see the car on the hard shoulder, but no the car driver was driving in lane 1 with the front and rear bumper hanging off and flapping around, the offside rear was smashed to bits with no lights left whatsoever, as I passed I could see a mirade of red and orange lights on the dash.
At this stage although shocked to see him actually driving it in that state, I considered that he was maybe trying to get to J15 ( which was only a mile or so ) to park it up safely off the hard shoulder, it was still dark and there was virtually nothing else on the road, what harm could it do, I continued on my way and chuckled to myself imagining a change of trousers for the poor car driver.
Not on your nelly !
As I was passing Sandbach Services and entering the roadworks, what should come by me at about 80 mph but the white Toyota that had been in the crash, I couldn’t believe he was continuing his journey with all the corners knocked off his car, it looking like it had done 12 laps of a demolition derby, He seemed unable to hold a steady speed and I started to catch him rapidly, he was weaving between lanes 1 and 2 and his speed had dropped considerably , I flashed my lights to warn him and went to go into lane 2 as I thought the car had probably given up the ghost what with all the warning lights I’d seen earlier, but no he speeds off again then starts to slow down, this went on for a few miles, at this stage I thought ■■■■ it I’m not going to try and pass him again as he must be falling asleep, we are approaching J18 at this stage and he has again sped off into the distance, I pulled off at J18 and called 999 to report him, I had memorised his reg number and quickly jotted it down before calling ( the old memory isn’t brilliant, every time I remember something new it pushes old stuff out ) I related the events to the emergency operator and away I went, a couple of minutes later the phone goes, it’s the motorway police, they want to know if the car is still in sight, I said no it wasn’t as I pulled off the motorway like a good boy to make the call, but I would guess it would be close to Knutsford at this point so you may still catch him, with this the motorway police guy said he had 2 cars in the area, and thanks for the call, job done.
About 20 minutes later my phone goes again, it’s the same motorway cop, calling by my first name ( very friendly) to let me know that they had stopped the vehicle and taken a person into custody for drink driving, he then thanked me for taking the time to call and report it.
It’s the first time I’ve been concerned enough to report a driving incident, we as drivers see so much bad and erratic driving that we get desensitised to it, but this was so bizarre I felt I had to report it, hopefully it stopped him from harming himself further,or worse, another road user ( think of the children ) from getting caught up in a nasty accident with the idiot.
Wel done, also if you’re calling the emergency services on 999 you can still do that whilst driving.
As in, NOT on a ‘hands free’■■?

If it’s an emergency to 999, doesn’t need to be hands free.
From gov.uk Using a phone, sat nav or other device when driving - GOV.UK
When you can use a phone in your vehicle
If you’re the driver, you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you:need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop

Question is… what did learning that just push out!!!
Nicely done on the call though, and a result - even better.

You reported him for a slight scratch, shame on you.https://mobile.twitter.com/NWmwaypolice/status/785346579037319168
And you memorised the number plate so the police could identify it!!

There is no punchline, always bad press about truck drivers But never good press, “HERO TRUCKER PREVENTS MOTORWAY PILE UP”
ok, hero tad to far but, the police should of given credit where due.
Well done anyway … let’s hope more truckers notice and report these idiot drink drivers.
I reported someone being very erratic and bouncing of central reservation one night. Turns out he was diabetic and having an episode. The motorway cops even phoned back to thank me.

What number plate good job though mate, big pat on your back.
Very late one night, about 2 in the morning on the M27, I could see what looked like fireworks in the distance
When I got closer it was a caravan that had lost the nearside wheel and hub and was being dragged along on its chassis - the sparks were spraying across the shoulder.
The Mondeo towing it was only doing about 40 so I easily caught him up and I pulled alongside the drivers door to have a look and there was this bloke with this stupid watch me get this home look on his face.
I moved on ahead reaching for the phone and rang it in and the dispatcher said I was the second caller about this.
However about a hundred yards behind me a wrecker in lane two all of a sudden lit up and after a brief pause literally forced the bloke onto the shoulder and stopped him.
Top work by the wrecker driver and I’m sure plod would have been along shortly afterwards.
■■■■■■ or stupid I never did find out.
I don’t know why it is but if a wobble box is going to loose a wheel 99.9% of the time it the nearside one. Maybe something to do with the way it rotates and the thread of the studs being right handed ■■? Good on yer for callin it in though.

Possibly because it’s the near side wheel which is more likely to have been bounced over drain covers, or thumped against curbs etc.?
U did good m8. U might have saved a live or a few. U never know.
