As a driver is it a drivers responsibility to vor a trailer with damaged or missing tape and can vosa fine the driver for no tape displayed thanks
Can’t see this tbh, italian police are by far the best i have had the pleasure of being stopped by. They seem to live in the real world youve got a job they have job thats all, unlike alot of other authorities vosa included.
Even if they did make there business as to your lack of a reflective stripe I can’t imagine any scenario where a poliza would stand in front of you requesting 9000 euro’s

The way this tape is applied to a curtain, when supplied new, it’s either on or not.
If it isn’t applied, your trailer almost certainly doesn’t need it
I suppose after a lot of years, it could become damaged, UV bleached, whatever. But that seems unlikely to happen overnight, so it should be picked up in an inspection. Unless there is a lot missing, I can’t see it being a VOR defect, just a report it job.
I seem to remember reading about this tape being sold for retro-fitting to older trailers. How that would stand up to normal wear and tear, I’ve no idea. There was going to be two types. A very flexible type, applied in squares to a curtain. A less flexible type for rigid sides, applied as a strip cut to size.
This is my wagon with reflective tape applied to my trailer curtain in manufacturing (That white stripe along the bottom of the curtain and in the top corners). It is also on my rear doors, showing the outline in red. The lettering on my cab is retro-reflective too.
saw article in truck mag how italians wanted 9000 euro for no stripe on the trailer and tractor unit,as this is law in italy now,but required on uk trucks, and the rha were intervening to assist the member.does anyone have info on reflective stripes,is it only for new italian trucks but i have seen the stripes on older trucks too.i mean not required on uk trucks.bad typing at all for trucks calais internet truck stop.
there is a notice in our workshop that NEW vehicles need the new stripes on the trailers but don’t need to be retrofitted. only if entering italy though
So all trucks are going to end up looking like paddy motors from now on then if they do Italy - maybe they should all have “Nolans” painted on them too and be driven by the sandal taliban.

its not that bad mark, the stripes are the ones on the curtain very small reflective squares like you see on the robbingromanians.
are you home for a bit? just waiting to load in acerinox for germany, again 3 in row
Just got home, I was meant to be loading Castellon last Friday for the UK, but at the last minute I had to do a rush job for Iberia - a wide load from Barrajas to Santander for onward shipping to UK - pain in the arse sitting at 70ks all the way up there I can tell you.
I shall be home now till at least miercoles - I need to work out how many hours break I need to take over the 45.

I thought the Italians had a reflective stripe in the truck and trailer for a few years now, all the Italian race transporters seem to have them.
But I never heard of a foreign truck being stopped for not having one in Italy, Would like a definative answer on this.
Most of Italian trucks use reflective stripe now also Romanian does
In recent saw lots of Willi Betz reefer trailers has reflective stripe on - maybe they had to put on to avoid the big fines by italian & romanian polices!
Have to say that the reflective tape is good and does improve
the safety and does make a truck, trailer , container etc. more visible
try looking at the 3m tape ,here in Germany many firms are using this
on their vehicles as added safety feature,
If the vehicle is legal in its country of registration, then the Italians are trying it on, they tried it a few years ago with the round 60km stickers

My thoughts exactly.
One point here remember AUSTRIA and the signs at the
rear end of the trucks, we still got done for not having
them , and it was not law for us in Germany, also the
speed limit signs for Italy we had fitted as it was
cheaper in the long run as regards the fine and Time
wasted arguing with the Italian police,

I remember that little scam too Malc.
IIRC, the fine was 40 or 60 marlboro
Happy days!!
Im sure i read in the comercial motor a few months ago that all new trailers as of 01/01/10 had to be fitted with reflective stripes and at a later date have to be retro fitted (European law) throughout europe??
The date might be wrong but im sure this is what i read!!
I have a new SDC trailer which came fitted with them, if you cant see the 5 marker lights on each side what chance have you of seeing the reflective tape??

Have you ever stood up for yourself against theses attempts too fine you for non existent offences? Or have you always just rolled over and let them shaft you each time? No wonder they keep doing it if they always meet drivers like you who let them get away with it.

Coffeeholic, with all due respect ,you have no idea what you are talking about. When the police decide to issue a penalty, unless your vehicle is registered in the country where the penalty is imposed , the penalty is payable immediately. Unless it is paid , the vehicle does not move. The penalty is a “deposit” against the fine that may be imposed at a later date by the court.
It is up to the owners of the vehicle to argue in court at a later date that the imposition of the fine was incorrect and demand repayment of the deposit.

I am well aware of the deposit scheme having driven all over Europe almost every week for the past 20 odd years, even paid a few and got a partial refund once in Germany. and that is fine (no pun intended) for real offences but you don’t have to bend over and take it for trumped up nonsense. I do know what I am talking about having successfully argued my way out of ‘fines’ for bogus offences on many occasions, and know plenty of other drivers who have done the same, mainly in Belgium and France.
For example, remember that ‘You must not have your key in the tacho head’ thing the Belgians tried on a few years ago, which many drivers paid? Three times I had that one tried on me and three times I never paid a cent, and the vehicle wasn’t prevented from moving on any of those occasions. Various bogus offences tried on in France over the years from incorrect time on the tacho when it is set to home country time, Spanish tried that one on me as well, to insufficient rest when splitting it or interrupting it on a ferry crossing, again argued each one successfully. The easiest thing is to demand it goes up the food chain and you would be surprised how fast these ‘offences’ go away when The Chef arrives on the scene, and that’s with having virtually no French, or Spanish, language skills. The Italian speed limit roundels thing, had that one tried on me once, never paid the fine as I dug my heels in and refused to pay for a non existent offence. Never had to argue with the Dutch, Germans or Swiss as they tend to stick to the facts and only fine you for real offences.

david1686, with all due respect ,you have no idea what you are talking about. I have twice been issued with a penalty in Germany and been free to leave without making a payment. On both occasions I paid it on my next visit to Germany and nearly frightened the life out of the guy in the cash office at Aachen Sud, don’t think he was used to people offering to pay. One of those was the time I got some of the money refunded because they had overcharged me for the offence.
