I know someone the same age, or he was last year, not sure he is driving now…But he was telling 50 years olds how it was going to be and not taking ■■■■from anyone last year, his nick name was Dirty Harry and he was a proper good driver and old school…Why would it be an accident waiting to happen?
I didn’t understand a word.
There are lots of drivers coming up to 45 who haven’t had to have a medical or eye test for over 20 years but you think a bloke who has a medical every year is an accident waiting to happen

With 58 years truck driving experience under his belt I’m sure he’s a ■■■■sight less likely to have an accident than a lot on the roads these days.
Good luck to him, hope he has many more years on the road
As heart warming as this story is, and as much as I take my hat off to him, sat next to him for 3 hours of RDC waffle would be my worst nightmare.
What you younguns have to bear in mind is this will be you in years to come as nobody will be able to afford to retire!

Why’s that? Because he has a medical every year and you don’t. Or is it because he’ll know more about the job than you.
Good luck to him sticking it out this long. Crack on driver.
Just his age. And good on him having a medical every year and still working.
But say he has a medical passes everything in good shape. Then 2 weeks later suffers a heart attack passes out or something.
At his age he should be retiring enjoying he well earned rest in the sun.
you can bet your bottom dollar that if he eventually retires, then he will be dead in a year.
itl be his routine keeping him going.
truckies dont have a great expectancy after they fail their mot.
years on middle east/euro work, then its years on uk work, after that its local shunting, then part time locals.
no sooner than you eventually fail your mot and are parked up at home, you might as well not be buying any green bananas or xmas cards.

Exactly.

Any of us could be taken ill a week after a medical, I’ve known people who’ve followed all the health advice and were into taking exercise collapse for some undiagnosed problem.
As for enjoying retirement, maybe he enjoys working, for some retirement doesn’t suit and just leads to a premature death.
My son-in-law died at the age of 36 whilst in a gym. Death can happen at any age, always has done and probably always will.

This is true. I’m 30 now and they keep putting retirement age up so by the time I retire it could be 80, if I can afford to retire that is!
We have got an 87 year old shutter at our place. Works full time nights, and is getting married this year too. Puts us young uns to shame. The other night he was shovelling grit into the tractor and gritting the site for a gud 3 hours then got on with his shunting. Real life super man [emoji3]

About 5 years ago I read an article in Commercial Motor about an owner driver who did UK to Morocco, and he was about 80 something, and he seemed fine.
Not quite as old but my buddy is 72 still driving distance fulltime, single never married ….he says if he retires he will die as he has no hobbies after 50yrs on the road and he did three tours in Vietnam for the UN (construction building schools, hospitals)back in the 60s.Does he need to work hell no ,multi millionaire now after he was left family farm(sold ) 27yrs on wae a fuel company so good pension, but as he tells me he needs to get up and do something as if he sits to long thinking he remembers Vietnam and his lost friends .
Hmmm…mixed feelings on this, good luck to the guy, but surely at that age his reflexes can’t be top notch?
Whatever anyway…I sure as hell hope I won’t be still driving a ■■■■truck anywhere near that age, sod that.

Quite a poignant story, I feel for your friend.

Maybe you’re thinking of Tony Bradfield?
He is no longer driving. Or smoking, or quaffing his tipple I’m afraid.
Honourably mentioned elsewhere in TNUK.
