80s trucking

I can imagine the Atki was a hell of a shock after an F10, sacrifice for going it alone I suppose. Looks more like something from the 50’s not the 70’s, seems very dated compared to the DAF or a Volvo, I can relate to driving those the first trucks I drove when I passed my test was a rigid version of the DAF and an F12.

That’s about right they were 50s technology, no pas, air operated wipers that were temperamental, non suspension seat, drop down windows, certainly no night heaters, and all the rest of it.
Mine was a day cab with a sleeper extension, so at least it wasn’t a board over the engine cover job, although I have done that in the past, as everybody else did in the 80s at one time or another.

When the Volvo 86 and Scania Vabis made a UK appearance (even before my time  60s) they were like chalk and cheese compared to the Brit motors, but they were not in a great hurry to catch up.

I walked into my transport office one day for a laugh and said I am having to defect the lorry, they were all serious and asked why,i replied with a smile no electric windows,i was basically told where to go with nasty swear words,i was quite upset, lol

Bit of 80’s trucking for you all.

For real retro defect fun. Don a donkey jacket, march into the office, throw your arms in the air and announce you’re not taking the unit on account that the gear stick has been stolen. You could further qualify your golden oldiness by adding you think the steering link has snapped as its far too easy to turn and no longer requires you to stand up when reversing.

A further parting turd in the face could be added to the cake like an odd brown fairy decoration:- slam the company mobile on the desk adding “some bugger must have snapped this off it’s cord from a phone booth and left it in the cab… I’m not carrying stolen Queen’s possessions”

Light a ciggy, steal the receptionist’s mug of tea, swipe the clerks copy of the ‘Sun’ then march back out of the office. As the door whimpers back on forth on its hinges, like a saloon door, your dying words trail, across the air into the office to an open mouthed selection of office bods looking all the much like goldfish who’ve just been kicked in the goldfish gold-balls. “I’ll see ya Monday ya bunch of soft towels, I expect my big J back on the road Mondaaay. I’m off darn the Crown for a pin…”

Contraflow:
Wtf are you talking about?

ignore me,could not think of anything to say so just put any old crap

Lorry HP means bugger all these days other than willy waving (Jeez those ponces with the HP writ large on the headboard etc amuse :unamused: ), a proper 320hp if it came from a 14 litre engines was far more driveable and useful than this modern pish reckoned    to be giving some 120/160hp more, these modern engines lack low rev guts, you only used about 5 gears of a standard 8 speed box when the engine cos its big enough in cc will pull like a good un from stall speed.

As the old saying goes, there’s no replacement for displacement

To be fair the usual range now is between 13-16 litre with modern levels of turbocharging producing more torque than the old ■■■■■■■ motor in typical 1980’s UK spec could probably dream of.It’s more likely to be the combination of silly auto gearboxes and emissions bs and speed limiters which castrates modern day engines. On that note take all the emissions crap and speed limiter off something like a 13 or 16 litre DAF or Volvo FH and fit it with a 13 let alone 18 speed fuller then see if it more than matches up. :bulb:
[/quote]
Was invited out on a powerboat the other day and the owner told me he had a pair of Volvo Penta diesels under the deck and that they were supercharged to a certain rpm then the turbos kicked in - one way of getting a better torque/bhp delivery across the rev range, I guess :sunglasses:

Just watched all of that, sweet memories of when life was better in some ways.
Made me Laugh a bit too, and I swear I saw old Mick Turner in the Portland cafe bit , the old boy must be pushing up daisies by now though.
And I felt sorry for that poor ■■■■■■■ driving that Daf 2500 up the hills what a gutless wonder to take up there …bloody arm would near drop off through overwork changing gear to keep it moving.

having spent many a sick day and holiday with my old man in the 80’s and my first truck being an old Iveco turbostar 88 plate, have to say you cant compare the wet nanny state haulage or logistics we have now as ‘better’, its worse by a country mile.

more inconsiderate run you over rather than help you, video you rather than give advice types about. yes the trucks were less powerful and had a clutch but hey ho I would swap that era for this one in an instant.

Brilliant, cheers for that.

Was that a young Timothy Spall doing the nerd routine for the camera at, presumably, the Earls Court show?..and then wreaking havoc in the CF van.

Yes it was.

I was driving over there in the 80’s, first for Swifts, then Transfleet and on to Federal Express. Swifts put radios and CB’s in the newer trucks. I Had a Volvo F7 to actually call mine, then an F10, then an FL10. The F7 didn’t come with a CB, I had to supply my own then some clever sod (me) suggested that all the trucks should have them to keep in touch on local runs, to my amazement Swifts agreed and paid for the installation in all trucks and a home base in the office … Oh the wind ups I had then LOL

Sitting around the back of the yard talking to the traffic office staff who had no idea how squelch or RF gain worked, telling them I was in Milton Keynes when I was actually 100 feet away LOL

anybody remember that davis turner program what was shown remember it any links think its 80s or 90s

There was also a programme about a Van Hee from Newcastle driver, who was the spit of Kenny Rogers the singer. That could have been early 90s also if I think about it.
There was another programme about a North East driver in the 80s in an ERF car transporter. It was about the upgrade of the A1. I remember them going into Quernhow Cafe in the days when it was a good caff.

I reckon you could do that now when you think about how many calls we get from planners asking where we are!

Appropriate choice considering his role as Barry in Auf Wiedersehen Pet (though not sure if this is from before or after that).
