8 Wheelers

Saaamon:
The builders merchant i started with had a 53 plate iveco tector 8x4 dropside grab lorry, that thing was a machine!

I’ve seen an ex Rigeons one about that has been repainted silver, shame they forgot to paint the crane!

Suttons Brixham for a fridge

trucker_craig:
lockwoods at ambergate got an 8 legger fridge on mushy peas

Thats gonna sink soon.

I reckon we’d have a use for one but then again, our 6wheelers can be a bit big for some deliveries.

wouldn’t tyres last longer than mushy peas
one wagon driver and 2000 mushy pea changers cant really be profitable

Plenty of eight wheeler tankers still around.

Sidevalve:
We got loads of 'em!

All with Moffett telehandlers, ours at Carmarthen is a Renault (POS :imp: ) but Radstock have Volvo FM12’s.

Shuttlespanker, that’d be John A. Stephens IIRC, yard’s down by the railway station; always had a good fleet. Back in the day they had some very tidy Bedford KM’s, always well turned out.

green motors, had to get some 8 wheelers in because the 6 wheelers were struggling on the weight

IIRC, they ran a lot of ERF EC series motors

Cobley Transport had/have at least 1 Scainia P cab 8x2 curtainsider with rear Mounty.

The main reason would be the weight capacity / volume. Why use a sledgehammer to crack s nut?

Sorry but you asked for boring

I suggested at our transport meeting about getting an 8wheeler. We do a lot of industrial bakeries and wholesalers who have forklifts so an 8w could do all these jobs rather than the 6w doing them here and there. I doubt one would be much fun in London but then what is?

Evergreen Lawns here in Norn Iron had a Foden 8 legger with a curtain side body for delivering turf, I think it may have had a Moffett too. Good looking wagon, I think its been replaced with a Daf CF unit and trailer.

John

Thanks for that john.
regards dave.

Only just noticed this thread but if anyone is still interested the firm from Macclesfield with green 8-wheelers on general haulage was Woodwards. They ran ERFs, a feature of which was the air filters which were mounted high on the headboard of the bodies. This gained an extra nine inches of body length as well as keeping the intake out of the dust and mud.
Woodies’ yard, next to the Flower Pot pub, is now a housing estate, the family having ceased general haulage some years ago. They are running a warehousing business from a farm between Bosley and Congleton as well as restoring steam engines and vintage tractors.
