This thread has just come along at the right time
I start my first truck driving job with an 8 wheel tipper on monday  Not sure of the exact truck but they had some Dafs in the yard L and M registration oh and a 10 plate (doubt id be driving that yet :unamused: :grimacing: )

So if you start before i do ,id be interested in how you get on !

Cheers Mike

Oooops that sounds naughty!!!

Ah ha 3rd loaded lovely job think its gonna be empty when I drive it as it doesn’t go out on day we using it I think. At risk o sounding even more stupid, you say 3rd loaded. What ya think empty?
Thank you

3rd loaded IS naughty! 3rd empty would be acceptable to me, the boss might have other ideas. You will see stickers in trucks informing you to take off in 1st, empty or loaded. And this post has reminded me there was a period 2-3 years ago when it looked like large firms were going down the road of speccing clutch saving devices that wouldn’t let you take off in anything but 1st. That seems to have fallen by the wayside.

Chewyboy, pick up your cards!

most of the daf are 4 over 4 some with splitter making them 16 speed although i think some of the really old daf cf had eaton twin splits in them , i have yet to drive one of these ive heard all the horrors stories about that gearbox i want to have a go at one as the fodens with twin split leave me standing from the lights  :open_mouth:

Now 4 over 4 I can handle. But a twin splitter!!! Now that will confuse.com me totally!!! Hopefully it will be empty and I’ll just leave that alone for now!!! Showing respect for the wagon is the main thing I think. As ya all said if in doubt just ask think that’s better than making a total hash of it hey.

Honestly a splitter is nothing to worry about.

Let us know what sort of work you will be doing with your tipper, quarries ,agriculture or whatever.

Have you had yr first drive yet baz ? i started on the tippers today daf 85CF and VOLVO FL7 both 4 over 4 gear boxes . Not much to worry about but then i did learn with a 4 over 4 box .

Loving the tipper work so far :grimacing:

cheers Mike

you will be unlikely to come across a twin splitter nowadays

a splitter is a completely different thing, just gives you a 1/2 gear between each normal gear

there’s some information about gearboxes in the sticky LGV Training Tips at the top of this forum

Just realised I not replied to any of this.

Well went for assessment, ended up having full day with boss on 8 wheel roll on/off. Bit shaky at first as been long old time. But soon got into it. He offered me the job there and then.

Been working for him now for 5 weeks. Got a 05 plate Daf I use. Nice motor I think. But told Saturday he is gonna give me the 10 plate Daf in couple of weeks. Got all the bits. It’s a beauty. Cannot wait. I’ll soon get moved into that.

The job is great I love it. Some of the places I go I never thought I would get in to. But with bit of patience and staying calm I been getting in. Bloody great job. Thanks all for advice.

u can normally pull away in 3 loaded

Yep, just ignore that stupid beeping and the “gear too high” bs that Dafs/Foden Alphas do

Good to hear that you are enjoying the tippers, just another one to keep your eyes on are stones between the wheels coming out of the tip, especially if they are 315’s
Cheers
John

And if you drive a steel bodied one, chances are there’s a “push-block” under the tailgate; these are a pain in the arse for cleaning stuff out of. They’re also pretty much obsolete nowadays anyway as mostplaces have banned pushing wagons. (It makes me chuckle when you see such a truck with “DO NOT PUSH!” plastered on the tailgate
