£8,21 an hour

I was talking to my wife the other day about the year 2000 fuel protests and that I was guaranteed £400pw. 18 years later I am still earning the same.

People have short memories in their long careers.

I’ve never got this obsession with what others get paid :unamused:

Totally right.

I’ve never asked or been interested in what hours another driver has done.

But I have been questioned by other drivers about my hours. I can’t use the language I want on here about them. But they are not my cup of tea shall I say.

As I’ve said - I don’t take liberties, I stay legal and safe. And do my best. Other drivers are more likely to complain about this than the transport office staff. It’s shameful and they are dirty rats. Upset if someone is quicker than them, and jealous if someone takes longer.

Sorry if that is over the top -but I’ve had experience of drivers trying to throw me (another agency driver) under the bus. Frankly in the army we considered these sort weakling cowards/grass’ and on civvy street I still do. Have a problem tell me to my face. If not get a life and crack on. I don’t take liberties - but I take it incredibly personally when someone tells tales behind my back.

The Amazon depots in and around London and the home counties and a bit beyond are showing posters claiming “our sortation associates are now on a minimum of £10.50 per hour”.

In other words, parcel sorters at Amazon (teenage Romanians) are earning, in some instances, more than class 1 HGV drivers.

Happy trucking!

And like the temps at Royal Mail, most of them will be on the dole after Xmas

If moaning drivers go work to Kfc or Kebab that 9 from 10 this Peron will call to Freshlinc or Stobart and will agree work for driver for 7 quid.Job at kitchen and factory more hard that driving and there more stress and rules.More Cctv, performance level and much more.

It’s not so bad at my current place but at my old place I was certain there was drivers who’d look at everyone else’s allocated work before their own.

"Amazon Warehouse Operative

EXCITING PAY RISE FROM NOVEMBER

£8.00 per hour (days) to £9.71 per hour (nights). Rising to £9.50 per hour (days) to £11.21 per hour (nights) from November 1st 2018.

Overtime rate between £12.00 per hour and £16.00 per hour. Rising to £15.55 to £21.00 per hour from November 1st 2018."

Of course, what they don’t mention is you will be out of work come January, but still - 9.50 for unskilled labor…that’s about the same as what most Class 2 jobs advertised by agencies around Birmingham are paying.

Amazon have Fulfilment Centres not warehouses. Looks like you could earn £3,000 for Christmas. If you need a job then why not?

There’s not enough hours left until Christmas to earn three grand at the rates in the posts above… :unamused:

Why not indeed. Pays on par with most driving jobs. Don’t need spend thousands on your licence. To get started. No more sitting in traffic all day endless phonecalls whats your eta etc
Be set hours.can plan your life better this time of year im.guessing be plenty of overtime.

Plus like any job keep.your.head down work hard your probably get noticed kept on and.be more chance of progession/promotion than there is driving a truck

Most of us would not last 5 minutes in amazon or anywhere similar, good luck to them.

Just because we feel we should be paid more does not mean others should be paid less.
Firefighters earn about £7k less than they did 10 years ago…similar for nurses and teachers…

Amen to that. I worked as a shunter at an Amazon depot… Sorry, ‘fulfillment centre’ [emoji849]… And it was the most depressing place I’ve ever had the misfortune to work in. The only happy ones had a crazed evangelism about the company, like they’d joined a cult. Even £15+ p/h and a cheap canteen couldn’t keep me there!

I fancy my chances more to ‘survive in the Amazon’ than on Boliva’s “Road of Death”…

Correct. They’re not “warehouse workers”, they’re now called  “Fulfillment centre associates”

I know people who used to work there, doing 60 hours/week between October and December, 5 or 6 days/week, they were taking home £500-600 and that’s on the old rates when overtime was paid less. Of course there’s the thing with walking around all day (not good for older folks or those with certain health issues) or standing all day sticking labels and folding boxes on the packing line - a one way street towards mental disability.

If I was 20 and healthy I’d go for Amazon or similar any day tbh. Physical activity yet not a lot of heavy lifting, plenty of people around to talk to, you actually appreciate and enjoy your breaks rather than stare at the tacho- key in ignition, hand on key, waiting for the timer to turn 15:00 like I do :astonished:

And yet there is the belief the general public has that drivers (in general) make a lot of money. Whenever I tell someone I’m driving trucks for a living now the first thing they say is “Oh, wow, so you must be making a lot of money now, huh?” “Nah, not really” “But don’t truckers get paid a lot?”…I used to try and explain the whole thing to them but I’ve given up
