7 night shifts

my boss has just got a new contract and he wants us to work 2 weeks on days and then 2 on nights, where legally possible he wants us to work 6 days or 6 nights. am i right in thinking that when on nights i cannot do 6 shifts as i would be finishing at 7am on sunday morning and starting at 7pm monday night so will then have driven on 7 consecutive days

as long as you have the option of a reduced weekly rest you would be ok doing it, but obviously that depends what rest you had the week before?

as long as it is over 24 hours rest and you can take it in line with your other rests then not a problem

I would like to know the exact shift patterns he is asking you to work so that it can been seen if it is legal for the weekly rest requirements - it’s just the way I like to do it

EXAMPLE (if this a two weekly repeating pattern)

Mon 7pm - Tue 8am
repeat daily…
sat 7pm - sun 8am (that is 6 night shifts done)
Minimum 24 hour weekly rest taken - 21 hours to pay back
Mon 8am - 9pm
repeat daily…
fri 8am - 9pm (that is 5 day shifts done)
Full weekly rest - Fri 9pm to Mon 7pm is 70 hours so covers 45+21=66
mon 7pm …

Your boss has asked you to work 6 consecutive shifts where legal so he obviously realises that you can’t do it every week.
There’s nothing to stop you from finishing at 07:00 Sunday and starting again at 19:00 Monday, you would have had a 36 hour reduced weekly rest so will need to payback 9 hours compensation at some point.

To be honest as far as I can see you won’t be able to work 6 shifts of 12 hours that often as you’re going to have trouble with the compensation.

Am I correct in thinking that the shifts will be 7 to 7 for days and nights ?

But anyway to answer your question, there’s nothing to stop you from working 7 consecutive days as long as long as the shift pattern allows for at least a reduced weekly rest after no more than six 24 hour periods from the end of the last weekly rest period.

thanks for replies lads, most helpful. just got to work out if it is best to do 2 weeks on days, 2 weeks nights or weeks about to get the most hours possible now . thanks for replies… rob.

Do you have a workforce agreement to opt out of the RTD(WTD) 10 hour night rule or will you be doing less than 10 hours WORK (driving+other work) each shift
Do you get paid more per hour on nights

If you can make more money on night shift than day shift it makes sense to do one week of 6 nights and then one week of 5 days - see my last example a few posts above.
If 2 weeks of nights and then 2 weeks of days then I don’t think it will make much difference as it is likely to be 6 nights, reduced weekly rest, 5 nights, full weekly rest, 6 days, reduced weekly rest, 5 days, full weekly rest and then repeated…

I’d tell him theres more to life than working your balls off all the time. There is a bit more to life than sitting ina tin box for umpteen hours a week.

Is your boss hoping to run one truck from Sunday 7pm to Sun 7am using 2 drivers on alternating 12 hour shifts
