7.5t test

Stupid question and I suppose I really should know the answer but I’m not sure.
I went straight to C+E, which you could in those days, but now you need to do a rigid test first.
Do you need to do a 7.5t test first? and if so does that only cover up to 7.5t?
And if not, is there any point in doing a 7.5t test, might as well go for the C.
I’m only asking because a friend asked me about getting his HGV licence to drive a 12t skip lorry.

You can go direct from B (car) to LGV C (which includes LGV C1)

I’ve often wondered why people bother with a 7.5t test when they could go straight to class 2 and get 'two for the price of one" so to speak.
The only people who would probably never need anything bigger are donkey box drivers, and most of them look horrified when they have to pass anything on a narrow road. Especially with two miles of traffic stuck behind their rotten Iveco. :smiling_imp:

I wondered that as well, and I think it’s because (and correct me if I’m wrong) that you don’t need the medical for a 7.5t C1 licence so for some people who may not be able to get a C for that reason can still do a C1. Apart from that I’ve no other explanation as to why you’d get C1 rather than doing C.

Yes, medical is still required. For me, the two companies I worked for would only put people through 7.5t first. Wouldnt even entertain the idea of putting someone from B to C

Think people in nhs do it to drive ambulances.

National Grid are the same, then they have to spend again to put you through class 2 despite it being the same cost for both. Prob bigger companies mostly doing that with transport depts who haven’t got a clue…or want to waste our money in the case of nationalised ones. In theory of course the DVSA / DVLA would be better off scrapping the C1 test as its kind of a cludge from the grandfather rights, but doubt they will.
