hi first post here just after some advice one of my friends works for firm that operate plant vechicles 7 1/2 tonne gross weight carrying small plant machinery can you driver a 7 1/2 tonne lorry carrying plant machinery on a public highway if you don’t have a c1 category on your licence just a standard car linence as his boss seems to think you can as it’s a 7 1/2 tonne plant lorry carrying plant machinery

Only if you passed before Jan 1997 I think. After this date a test has to be passed.

If you passed before that date then you will have C1 on your licence

You can only drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonne if you have the C1 on your licence unless there are some exeptions

Firstly welcome.

To be legally allowed to drive a vehicle over 3.5t and less than 7.5t you must have C1 category on your licence.

So your mate needs to check whether he has a full category C1 on his licence otherwise he is unlicenced and uninsured.

cheers for your replys guys he just has a standard car licence his had it 5 years so he won’t have the c1 category on it i told him he could’nt drive it on a standard car licence he needs the c1 category but his boss seems to think different

It doesn’t matter what his boss thinks.

It will be down to what the VOSA officer or Police Officer has to say when they pull him. It may not be this year, but it is likely it WILL happen.

And being unlicenced and uninsured carries heavy fines

If the firm’s running a 7.5 then they should have an operating licence. That means the boss ( or at least someone in the firm) has to hold a CPC. By definition, holder of same should be familiar with licencing law.

Your mate needs to find out who that person is, and inform them of what is happening, before the company and its staff end up in big trouble.

If they have a restricted O’licence to carry thier own goods they won’t need a CPC holder.

True, I’d forgotten about that. Mind you, if they’re that ignorant of basic licensing laws they don’t deserve to be holding one, restricted or not!
