6ft width limits in roadworks on m5

Its Polish and Romanian driver,s in English trucks doing that ■■■■ most proper drivers stick to lane 1 like the good old days pre 2000, plus its there mates in there own plated trucks cz p and all that dutch trucks do it to, ■■■■■ me of nearly loosing me offside mirror on a daily basis.

I prefer metres and I started driving HGV in 1989

Motorway temporary signs = I may be wrong
I thought that temporary signs are advisory not legislation unless an application under schedule 36 has been applied for, temporary width restrictions come under schedule 12 part 3 and therefore (my understanding ) are merely advisory

Roadworks seem to mess with people’s heads. Most car drivers seem to suffer from Outside Lane Syndrome and must be in it at all times even in traffic jams. Show them some cones and they want to sit in the middle lane doing 45.

Cones also seem to be a green light for truck drivers to ignore lane restrictions. Perhaps they’re too stupid to realise the penalty will be just the same as driving in the outside lane if they get caught.

I find the opposite where as soon as they see roadworks with a outside lane restriction they pull right in front ram on the brakes and sit at 40.

Slightly off track when did the restriction on caravans and trailers using the 3rd lane get lifted ?

The middle roadworks near Gloucester are a bit unusual, the nearside and middle lanes are marked up as 2.9m but many large vehicle drivers appear to just read them as 2m and stay in inside lane.

That has probably got something to do with the average age of lorry drivers. Virtually any sign which is only in metres mean SFA to me and many others I am sure. I know that schools have been teaching metric units for many years, but why should any driver have to start doing mental arithmetic to convert information on a warning sign? Filling station canopies are the worst. Every sign should be dual marked as should every trailer or vehicle.

So who can immediately and honestly say that they know by heart what the following are going to appear as in metric, given that you have just come round a bend in the road and are confronted with the sign?

13’ 6", 13’ 9", 14’, 14’ 3", 14’ 6", 14’9", 15’ , 15’3", 15’ 6", 15’ 9", 16’ , 16’ 3" & 16’.

because they rather nicely put both the metric and imperial width restrictions on the signs, so you can choose which one you understand!

my MUST MAKE THE BOAT BUTTON.also shrinks my width to 5 ft 11"…and for some reason also plays havoc with my limiter…never understood why, just another cross we have to bear…ho hum :smiling_imp:

I’m not sure it has, nor that the presence of people doing it makes it the case.
