How many are killed by drivers on there phones?

probably as many as are killed by drivers not on their phones whether they are speeding or not…itl make no difference…just a revenue generating cash cow.

And thats why i asked everyone keeps saying how bad it is but give no figures to back it up. People get killed walking along the path which should we ban the walkers or the cars that may hit them.

So does this mean pc plod cant use there handheld radios now as its a mobile device if its not for emergency purpose while driving.Or will it be one rule for that and an other for the public.

It’s a slippery slope, next thing drinking tea or mixing ones pancake batter will be frowned upon.

Although it’s a good thing in general especially in London when half the drivers are sending a tweet or updating their facialise status at every set of traffic lights.

Should ban drivers being in neutral at traffic lights as well.

This thread just goes to show how the media can manipulate the public in to being histerical about something that has gone on for years. It’s nothing more than a cash cow. Wonder if it will mean Ptt devices too as they say NO EXCUSES applies to all. As said there’ll be a quick purge to get numbers up an look like it’s being tackled yes holding the phone to your ear us bad the law is poorly written and I think it’ll be poorly implimented

This.^

It’s what’s known as policy creep. They start off with something fairly inoccuous then slowly but surely alter the rules so in the end the law is so draconian that no-one would have supported it to start with. Much like the boiling water/frog analogy. What will be next? Both hands on wheel at all times or it’s driving without due care? Or some other policy that’s been carefully engineered to be socially unacceptable and is easy to “crack down on”?

I support punishing people texting whilst driving 'cos that’s just plain daft, but if talking on the phone is sooooo dangerous why don’t they ban hands free too? It’s because they wouldn’t be able to enforce that nearly as easily as being able to see someone with phone in hand. Smack of cash cow to me.

I agree that the law is wrong

Legal to drive one handed as long as vehicle is under full control
Illegal to drive one handed with mobile phone in other hand as it is distraction
Legal to drive two handed on hands free but have the same distraction as using hand held
Illegal to be stationary in traffic with handbrake applied and use hand held

If the distraction is the issue when vehicle is moving then why allow hands free

legal to use a 2 way radio mike
legal to use a satnav and look at it trying to work out where your going whilst its stuck on the windscreen obscuring your vision,or buried in the centre consul causing you to look away from your normal forward view.

illegal to take a hand off the wheel to drink or eat a mars bar when your sitting in a full auto on cruise control with lane recognition etc,…beaurocratic cash cow…nothing more.

Maybe driver facing (or side on facing) cameras will come in handy to try and prove against what plod has just said against you…■■?

Good idea, I might buy myself one.

What really annoys me is that many cars these days that are shall we say, a bit more than the average Astra, like my Volvo, have Blue tooth installed as standard.
So when I see some ■■■■■■■ in an Audi, BMW, Range Rover et al, on a handset, I think they are posing rather than showing an ounce of common sense.

Only thought of it after being stitched up by a previous employers manager.

The ■■■■■■■■ police put on their Twitter yesterday that not only did they issue a lorry driver with 6 points and a £200 fine, they went the whole hog and reported him to the traffic commissioner as well!

Is this normal? :open_mouth:

For those throwing around the slippery slope logical fallacy about banning the radio, eating, talking, etc., it should be remembered that dealing with smart phones is distracting in that the user is required to look at the device’s screen instead of where they are going. It’s less about the driver being mentally distracted than it is about visually distracted.

Can you use your indicators without looking at them? I’d hope so! What about the radio? I can, but it depends on the specific vehicle. How about a CB? As long as it’s in easy reach. Grabbing a chocolate bar from the door pocket, opening it and eating it? Sure - it requires a little more mental concentration, but your eyes don’t need to stop looking ahead/around. Opening an app on a phone and typing a message? That’s where the difference lies… If phones had physical feedback like they used to (as people have mentioned in many other threads), it’d not be so much of an issue, but modern devices are almost exclusively visual.

Someone posting a message when the phone is on their lap (or even on their steering wheel) is going to be less aware of what’s going on ahead of them than those who simply have the phone to their ear. As others have pointed out, a one-size-fits-all law isn’t universally fair. The same goes for using a phone when stationary.

I’m not defending the law, by the way, I’m just explaining why phone use can be (but is not always, of course) more serious than some of the other activities mentioned. You’re still going to get idiots who pay no attention to their driving even when they’re not on the phone.

It’s cherry picking to suit a political agenda in my opinion

Big problem I see a lot on the roads as many of us do I guess. Occasional phone call with one hand isn’t so bad and can understand some people getting peed off with a big fine and points for that, but there are also a lot of people who are obviously texting or checking facebook, twitter etc. and posting stuff as they are driving, that’s not good.

I can also see the cash cow side of this as well… over christmas there was a spate of break ins to peoples sheds etc. around my way and when people phoned the police to report it, all the police did was tell them to claim off their insurance, didn’t see an increase from the usual zero police presence to patrol the area more often on the look out yet when it comes to this new ‘law’ they are out in large numbers.

I think the Police are slowly becoming a corporate organisation with financial targets to reach as opposed to the vision Robert Peel had for them.

anybody justifying drivng whilst using a mobile phone read and digest bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-ox … e-39153161

crap hapens and once again no doubt he got crucified because of the media coverage with the blond bint emotionally showing off her knees in the interview…its a pity he wasnt speeding more than he was,as if that was the case,he wouldnt have been in a position to head on the other dude…hence crap happens…just a fact of life where the vast majority od frivers speed to varying degrees, and the vast majority use the mobile constantly(again to varying degrees),nothing will change it as its only another cash cow. apparantly if you check the link, shes now made an emotional appeal for the A34 to now have the speed limit reduced to 50 instead of 70…no doubt the duddly doogood road management pricks will be having her as their latest puppy ,so that should make a few million motorists extremely happy.:unamused:

Yep quite normal for the Police to be hysterical and overreact.
But yes a HGV driver will be reported to TC.

Course using a hand held phone for any pro driver is beyond dumb but people do silly things and you can guarantee the moment you do someone will be watching.

How many points for this…

I don’t know, a day in the van and I’m famous…

A friends just been done. Pulled out of Rdc and approaching curb to pull up and make the call to depot. Has he was placing phone back onto the cradle he was clobbered by a plain clothed police officer.
