5th wheel height

It might be a stupid one but where do you check 5th wheel height?
It can be 1250mm or 1300 or even different I don’t know. What I do is just measuring it with a tape measure.

Regards,
Simon

Simon ,
why do you ask ? Is it a general question or Is it because your trying to hook up to trailers that differ by a few inches to your unit ■■ and your units too low when you back under trailers that others have dropped ■■

is the your fifth wheel a “Jost” adjustable type or a “fixed” type
There is normally a plating Tag on side edge riveted to turntable to help identify make/model/type/spec`

here is how:-
Lay a broom handle or flat level item across the top of your fifth wheel , (may or may not be a bit greasy – use disposable gloves H+S  ),
with the fifth wheel -flat-level with ground ( bar and timber chocks under rear to level it if not ) ,
If you have air suspension – put the setting on pad to normal cruise ride height ,
the measure from flat ground area to lower edge of broom stick , (ile keep my mrs grounded while you do it  )

norma l measures aprrox 47/48 inches for standard height .

It all depends on what your unit has been spec`ed on , ie:- standard or low profile tyres - what type of fifth wheel (make manufacture- low level / high level / adjustable height , fixed or slider ), + also suspension setup and specification.

If trailers you are likely to pull , are something other than standard, the fifth wheel’s height needs to be altered as part of the spec’ing process.

He may need to know if he uses trailers like ours which have a height marking of say “height 4.25M based on a 5th wheel height of 1250mm” although none of the units have the 5th wheel height signed, so like you say,its a stick and measuring tape job.

You will get a much more accurate measurement with a trailer on especially after a movement across the yard with full air pressure, after all that is how it would ride on the road and under low bridges. Then stop and measure from the king pin / landing plate to the floor.

As mentioned some trailers have got something like 13’ 3’’ when coupled to a 1250mm fifth wheel although why workshops want to mix imperial with metricular measurements the pope only knows.

Occasionally you will see a trailer with a sign saying this trailer is 14’ high, it may well have been when parked in a puddle & coupled to the yard shunter with bald tyres. It was probably 14’ 2’’ at the rear end.

or just hook up to a trailer, and get the tape measure out, christ trux, you do things the hard way!

trailers im pulling now are marked up as either 4.2 or 4.4 on a 5th wheel height of 1250mm, ive got a standard spec FH Volvo, and after picking trailer up got the tape measure out, and the actual height of my 5th wheel, and probably most FH’s is actually 1300mm
