hi troops, i’m sorry i ain’t been on for awhile, 50ft trailers, do you need a chitty to pull 1 of these ■■ fanx
WTF is a “Chitty”?
You can pull them on a C+E Licence, and all companies I have used them at gives in-house training before allowing drivers to take them out.
a piece of paper stating yer competent to pull a 50ft’r, i’ve been told this is needed ( by another driver)

In that case, Depending on the company - Yes.
It is a company requirement, not a legal one.
No technically you don’t need anything, but most if not all the companies that are using them would prefer you to have, and would no doubt offer you, at least some in-house training before you go out on the road with one, just to cover their own arses if you were to wipe out a street full of cars with one.
Could be wrong but dont think theres anything special needed.
If its rear steer it maybe usefull to have a few tips but basically a class 1 licence covers it and any driver should be able to get to grips with different combinations quite quickly. After all its why we are paid the big bucks.
Course a peice of paper that says you have been trained might cover the companys arse a bit but in reality is worth ■■■■ all.
Chitty is a movement of a trailer it’s nuts how some companies use this term then you join a new company and they look at you like you have 2 heads when you say it
Many thanks chums
You do but their not paper any more, it’s called a driving licence
hook up and crack on!!!

We have a “vehicle special order” or VSO which lists the chassis numbers of our long trailers and we can only pull a trailer if it’s on that list but I couldn’t pull a long one belonging to a different company. This is a government project and we have been told to carry this VSO with us at all times in case we’re stopped by the authorities.
So to answer your question then yes we need a chitty.
No you do not need a chitty you can pull up to a 60ft trailer without a chitty or a second man accompanying you.
Years ago when I was tramping for Vic Wild, one of the flat trailers was a cut down 50 footer, so it became a 40 footer with the axles right at the arse end.
One or two drivers never twigged on until they’d dragged it over a couple of roundabouts!

Looks like this guy slipped through the net having not a clue how to make a tight turn in one!

The trouble is they have an amazing amount of ■■■ swing, if you’re turning 90 degrees left you have to be wary of what traffic is coming towards you on opposite side of the road. Looks like this poor driver in the picture forgot about the swing.
knowing where he is , he shouldn’t have attempted that turn . you would be pushed to do it with a 45 footer .
He should have been 10ft further down the road before he even attempted the turn
Well, if you’d between one of the audience at the Argos RDC I s at today, attempting to put a 45 footer onto the bay, you’d know why the title of this thread makes me shudder!
