5 to 7 years experience required!

Just browsing through ads for driving jobs as I do now and again when bored on POA…

Job at travis Perkins Northampton for a class 1 driver. Says they want 5-7 years experience!! Why?

Just a guess but im going to go with “because thats what they’ve decided they want” experience wise

As above, and quite possibly due to keeping insurance down?

So if you’ve done 2 years doing store deliveries to tesco or whatever they don’t want you, but if you done 7 years doing nothing but RDC work then they’ll give you a shot.

Just seems an odd number (no pun intended) where the standard across the industry seems to be 2 years experience

7 years rdc work is still 5 years more experience than 2 years for tesco deliveries.
It’ll be the insurance. Maybe they get cheaper premiums for over 5 yrs experience or they’ve worked out the average and found that guys with 0 to 4 years experience cause the most damage

Agreed it does seem odd, but the insurance co.s have all the data, and are not likely to make arbitrary rules, as they want the trade. As Snowman says it`s most likely them setting rules.

What does it mean 5 to 7? So they dont want 8 then, do they?

Is it illegal to ask for a driver “Must be over 25” when offering a full time job advert?

Guess youre correct. Or maybe they only want someone with 6 years experience? Thats between 5 and 7.

I have 11 years experience, that’s me out the the running

Wait til next year and you`ll qualify for 2 jobs. 5 and 7. Or maybe one job on double pay?

I’ll go with the latter please

its clear someone with 7 years experience has a long track record and is more a safe bet for quality
but the problem is having 27 years myself and driving when driving was real driving ie gear boxes no sat navs etc it doesnt count for much as the morons who can not drive in autos and sat navs can earn the same amount without the brain or experience and skills the real drivers have

sign of the times i know but if i was under 2 years driving and doing stores i would be very lucky to get a start let alone a job in the game, they clearly value there trucks to not end up stuck under a bridge or end up stuck down a country lane they must be looking for drivers that have brains enough to work out how to avoid such things ?

Which probably translates as East Euro with dodgy un checkable work history preferred than indigenous workforce no experience required.Bearing in mind the ‘driver shortage’. :imp:

The problem with that idea is how do you replace an ageing driver pool if new drivers aren’t given a chance.Bearing in mind the driver ‘shortage’.

how do you think i got my first start 27 years ago ? i had passed my test and had no experience, like i said there was no sat navs or aids in driving back then other than maps and i had to learn on the job
it was the same back then as you needed experience so i had to get work with sub contractors that would give me a chance at crap money then after a few years doing all sorts i moved up to a good firm as my experience counted

now i didnt hit a bridge or do anything major wrong other then the odd reverse mishap or the odd wing mirror being cracked
but what i do remember is how the old guys tried to pass on there experience to me with road knowledge or tips and tricks etc
so how does anyone learn to gain experience ?

Why not just put 5+ years? 5-7 years is a bit of a daft way to put an advertisement.

You are correct, sir. So having established that the fool wot wrote the ad aint as clever as us, who wants to be employed by them? Makes me feel better knowing theres bigger fools than me out there. (maybe not many tho)

More than 5 less than 7, simples. We want experience but not too much 'cos we don’t want you telling us desk jockeys how to do the job.

Paying serious money and a quality fleet, so they want people with a proven track record, who can blame them.
