Overview
The maximum speed limit for HGVs over 7.5t on single carriageway roads is prescribed in Schedule 6 of the Road Traffic Act 1984. The current speed limit on single carriageways for HGVs over 7.5t is 40 mph. The speed limit for smaller HGVs (those between 3.5t and 7.5t) is 50 mph. The Government made a commitment in ‘The Logistics Growth Review — Connecting People with Goods’ document published in November 2011, to consult on this issue during 2012.
Stakeholders have said that the 40 mph speed limit causes unnecessary cost to vehicle operators, congestion, avoidable overtaking accidents and creates an uneven playing field for businesses.
The freight and logistics sector is an essential part of the economy, vital to businesses of all sizes and sectors. Raising HGV speed limits on single carriageway roads could lead to quicker journeys and lower costs for the sector, aiding economic growth as well as reducing frustration for the many drivers who find themselves stuck behind slower-moving lorries on busy roads unable to overtake.
However there are other consequences of greater speed — both in terms of the environmental impacts and the potential effects on road safety. The Department wants to make sure we have carefully considered the evidence of all of the effects on the economy, environment and road safety before any decision is made
Consultation? With whom?
No chance of it happening cos outfits like BRAKE want us all to drive at 10mph and park up when they’re taking their kids to school.
Going off topic a bit here,
What happened to the Boris Johnson thing were he was going to ban HGV from London?
Is there a petition to sign to have HGV banned cause I will defiantly sign it??
Back to topic, Even if they raise it, If a road is only safe at 40 that’s what I will do no matter who’s behind me!
Madguy
i was told that they were reviewing it by the ex bobby who hosted a speed awareness course i was recently on, we got into a debate about the 40 mph thing when he found out i was a truck driver, the only one in the room infact, he pointed at me and said something about doing 40 on an A road to which i replied, no, if the road is suitable i do 50… we got into quite a bit of a wrangle but he came to chat during a break and by the time i’d finished he understood my motives for breaking the law as he originally put it… i hope they do raise it, it is a common sense thing though, just because you can do a certain speed legally doesnt mean its safe, but then we are professional drivers, are’nt we?
Madguy, just google e petitions and search what you want to find, sign up & that’s it. There are some belters like ban HGV from overtaking on motorways & A roads and ban mothers from Facebook!
If there change the speed on a single carriageway from 40 to 50, IMHO it won’t make a blind be of notice, you still get the supermarket drivers doing 40 (fuel economy )and there’s your problem limits are there. does not means you have to do it.

Thats true but it means those who choose to do 50mph can legally do so without the risk of prosecution.
Having done supermarket work, ASDA for 3 years, they tend to keep around the speed limits because they get a written warning if they get caught. At least we did at Washington depot. You are constantly told not to speed as you are hourly paid so why rush. I tended to go at the speed that suited me on the shift, need to get back early I’d go faster etc.
