4 on4 off

Why is this becoming so popular with firms , is the wtd causing them issues , only thing I can think of
Mate rang me up saying there were jobs going tues- sat , mon- fri , but if either didn’t suit there was 4 on / 4 off ,
I remember years ago drivers with a year / two too go asking to cut back from 5 days too 4 and being refused , now it seems firms can’t wait too get drivers on 4 days a week( or 4 on 4 off

its not complicated to work out the benefits- if its done right, as many firms do
The company gets 7 day a week coverage without paying premium rates for weekend working.
it utalises its vehicles to the max

Drivers only work 6 months a year ( or just about) for a salary akin to a full years pay

the trouble comes when some firms don’t want to pay a living wage for 4 on 4 off but still expect the benefits

The trouble I had when I tried taking on a driver to do four-on four-off on my truck was that the first time it was his turn to do a weekend, he decided that he didn’t want to miss the Formula One racing on the television, so he pretended I had told him something completely different to what I had actually told him so I sacked him.

And the thought that the truck would be used 100% of the time equally shared by 2 drivers didn’t cross your mind? :open_mouth:

To be fair Harry, you are guilty of giving a job to a half-wit!

Yes. And I did tell absolutely everybody when I started him “I think it will all fall apart the first weekend he’s due to work and there’s a Formula One race on the TV, he won’t show up”. When I showed him the truck, I said “It’s got a television so you can watch the Formula One racing”. But still, he didn’t take the hint. He was an old mate from twenty years ago who had been out of work for several months, so I tried to help him, but he just wouldn’t help himself. It was only the highlights on terrestrial TV.

Now he has got a job, working five-on two-off for the crappiest firm in the area, starting at 02:00 and doing 15 hour days, for less than I was paying him for doing four-on four off on Gregory’s work, which is a complete doss. Working over three months a year for nothing.

Still, at least he gets to scream at his television every other Sunday afternoon.

You can’t save em all Harry, you can’t and shouldn’t fight Darwinism!

For some it’s easy to see. For others . . . well. :unamused:

I’ve never took any interest in 4 on 4 off as its never been offered too me so never thought about benefits etc just remember drivers getting near retirement and asking too knock a day / two off there week and being refused point blank

Plenty of time off, good for the school run, less commuting if it’s a day job, more opportunity for overtime or any other work you might do, can drink copius amounts of alcohol 4 evenings out of 8 evenings, can have long weekends away without using annual leave, 4 drivers could keep a truck running 24/7. I’ve tried to get on with someone who does it but I’ve given up now.
