There is new technology that can now read ghost plates, PC Plod has revealed the true scale of the use of illegal 3D and 4D ghost plates, with more than 4,000 non-compliant plates identified in a single location in Birmingham in just two weeks. https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/technology-pilot-exposes-thousands-of-illegal-ghost-plates
I’ve read the article but I’m still none the wiser exactly what a ghost plate is. Is it the same as a simple false plate? If so, how does the tech work to identify them?
magine this: you’re driving through London. A speed camera flashes but the car ahead of you doesn’t slow down. There’s no reaction. There’s no fine. And there’s no trace. All because they are using a ghost number plate, a sneaky bit of kit designed to dodge detection.
So, what is a ghost number plate, really?
In simple terms, it’s a modified or tampered registration plate designed to evade ANPR cameras (that’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition for the acronym lovers). These high-tech plates use tricks like:
-
Reflective sprays that bounce light to confuse infrared lenses
-
Transparent films that block detection
-
Character tweaks that mess with camera software
The goal? To make a number plate unreadable to enforcement systems.
Soon though that will probably be countered by another techno doo-dad maybe?
Revolving number plates. As used by James bond
Or hung of chains on back of trailer-same effect
Seem see lot drivers these days with trade plates stuck in back window and do wonder at times are they actually working on a job
I seen a transit in my street with some faded number plates on it. Although I could read it, when I took a pic of it the camera couldn’t make it out.
Furthermore, the reg (the one I could actually read ) was fake too, no tax or mot history on it
Not condoning it. But. If you live in a city where theres a clean air zone and your car ain’t compatible some will take chances to avoid the £10 a day or what ever it is.
