35 hours CPC training next week booked

What am I likely to expect? old time drivers have told me I will get bored but will get something out of it being a brand new driver. On the job front walked into a local skip company and asked for a job, felt like I was being laughed at when he asked me what experience ive got but he said to write his name on top of the application form that we had a chat and you had been in the office and he said we will go from there.
Had some agencys ring me up aswell saying theres temp work for the postoffice etc… but they wouldnt advise a person whos already in full time work to take it - frustrating… Got my digi-card today aswell so the door has opened to the big wide trucking world and this is the first time in a long time so many new doors have been opened!!!

scrub last entry - I need to go to specsavers - it says week not weekend

what will you be doing for the week - drivers hours, customer service ■■?

Go with an open mind ready to learn. Ask questions and join in. Ignore the old timers who say it’s boring. They’ve either gone to the wrong trainer or they’d already made their mind up that they knew it all.

You’re there to learn - not just to tick the box of attendance. This is an opportunity to gain a lot of knowledge so make the most use of it.

Hi Poolie101,

Depending on the trainer, some of the old time drivers might well have a point.

It’s fair to say that the quality of periodic DCPC varies quite considerably, so there’s a bit of pot-luck involved, but if you get a good trainer, I think that you will benefit greatly as a new driver.

Peter makes very good points about the old time drivers, but a good trainer should be able to engage with 90-odd % of old time drivers if the trainer has genuine knowledge and a good instructional manner.

My best tips for you are that you approach the training with an open mind and give it a fair chance.

Please let us know your thoughts on it?

On the drivers hours and WTD cpc I did, we had an informal test at the beginning and end of the day to see how much we’d improved.
I beat the 4 other drivers hands down on both tests. Probably because I’d just read and learnt all the information and they’d been doing it for years…
I think a couple of them couldn’t really be arsed with it but when a driver who’d had his licence 10 days beat their test scores, their competitiveness kicked in and they seemed to pay more attention.
I still learnt stuff about the WTD that isn’t part of the theory test.

That’s great. An excellent example of a technique designed to get everyone involved. End result, everyone gains something from the day. And that’s as much as we can ask for.

Edit. Not relevant.

That ought to be a statutory requirement for the dcpc - not a pass or fail - simply a way of seeing who might need more help

It works really well.
There was also an analogue chart to fill in on a page and another 1 below it so that when we marked the test, you could fill the bottom 1 in correctly.
And you get to take it home so you can use it as a reference.

Just had a very intresting 7 hours learning about Digital Tacho’s and Road Traffic Laws, got to say being a new driver I think the CPC course seems very useful and I will get a lot out of this. The trainer was excellent and being the only new driver in the room, the trainer was very happy with me to answer questions and wrote loads down, got some very good booklets which I will read through about 100 times to understand it fully but what I really want is some experience in the big wide world!!

Hi ROG yeah there was a little test at the end but it was informal, ive asked the trainer if he will give me some scenarios/test at the end of the week which he was happy to do also, having no experience yet at all with a digital and manual tacho’s its a bit of a nightmare to take in but just found a link rolminex.com.pl/site_media/a … ulator.swf which seems good that deals with tachos etc so gonna have a little play around with it… and all this you can drive for 4.5 hours but need a 6 hour break for working time directive is a lot to take in for a brand new driver with no experience…

Surely they should make this part of a HGV test… Thank god for my CPC week - so much to learn.

Initial dcpc module 2 should be a test on the regs IMO instead of the dumb senario test it is now
